(10 points!!) coconut oil ?!?!?

What is the secret to gorgeous hair? 10easy points!?

Delilah

Answer
Massaging the scalp and hair with warm oil, preferably infused with hair-friendly herbs, is the best way to nourish the scalp and hair topically. Not only does the massage work wonders for your hair, but it also relaxes the mind and nervous system. The oil for the massage can be customized by hair and body type. If your hair is thin, dry and frizzy and prone to split-ends, you have Vata hair. If you have fine hair prone to premature thinning or graying, you are Pitta-predominant. If you are predominantly Kapha, your hair will tend to be thick and oily.

The Benefits

A warm oil massage, done at least once a week (if you have more Vata in your make-up, you would want to try to do it two to three times a week), has the following benefits:

It lubricates and conditions the scalp, helping to prevent flakes and dry scalp without the use of harsh chemical shampoos.
It helps enhance blood circulation in the head and neck area. When the scalp is “tight” from stress, circulation and hair growth are impeded.
It helps relax the scalp and increase pliability.
It helps strengthen the roots of the hair and nourishes the hair-shafts, promoting new hair growth and strengthening current hair.
It helps soften and condition the hair, making it more manageable.
It spreads the natural oils of the hair, increasing hair luster and vibrancy.
It helps protect hair from the damaging effects of the sun and harsh weather by improving resiliency over time.
It is replenishing and rejuvenating for dry, damaged hair, and helps prevent excessive brittleness and split-ends.
It helps pacify Vata dosha. Especially when enriched with Vata-pacifying herbs, a warm oil hair and scalp massage can be wonderfully relaxing for the mind and nervous system.
When fortified with cooling, Pitta-pacifying herbs, the hair and scalp massage can help balance Pitta dosha and help prevent Pitta-related problems such as premature graying or thinning of hair. It also helps reduce body heat in general, especially if you have been up late a few nights or your eyes are smarting from too much close work on the computer or reading. A Pitta-pacifying massage also helps promote emotional balance.

The massage helps relax the muscles in the neck area.

The hair and scalp massage can help promote sound sleep at night.

Choosing a Massage Oil

If you are Vata-predominant, choose almond oil or sesame oil as the base oil. Both of these oils are very nourishing for the scalp and hair and help reduce stiffness and tightness in the scalp.

For Pitta persons, cooling coconut oil is the ideal choice. Because coconut is very Pitta-pacifying, coconut oil massage can retard hair problems such as thinning and premature graying that are associated with an aggravated Pitta dosha.

If you are Kapha-predominant, sesame or olive oil are good choices. Olive oil has purifying properties that help keep pores open.

While massaging with a dosha-appropriate base oil can be helpful, ayurvedic oils designed for hair and scalp massage typically include one or more hair-friendly herbs to augment the benefit of the massage. Traditionally, these herbs are slow-cooked with the oil, and the oil is then strained and ready for use.

Brahmi helps calm the mind and nervous system, pacifies Vata and is very nourishing for the hair. It helps promote hair thickness and body. Amalaki is cooling, nourishing and purifying all at the same time, so it is wonderful for all types of hair. It is especially beneficial for Pitta-predominant people because it pacifies Pitta and helps ward off premature thinning and graying of hair. It also helps prevent dry scalp and flakes. Bhringaraj, which translates to “king of tresses,” is also Pitta-pacifying and very nourishing for the hair. Hibiscus is cooling and helps maintain hair color and vitality. Neem is good for Kapha hair; it has purifying and cleansing properties. Rosemary and Lavender are excellent for all types of hair. Rosemary helps stimulate hair follicles and promotes growth, helps retard premature thinning and graying, and soothes and conditions the scalp. Lavender stimulates hair growth, balances oil production and replenishes the hair and scalp. Jasmine helps alleviate stress.

How to Do the Scalp and Hair Self-Massage

Pour some oil into a bowl and warm the oil by placing the bowl in some hot water. The oil should be warm but comfortable to the touch.

Using the pads of your fingers, apply the oil little by little to different parts of your scalp, parting your hair as needed. Also work some oil along the length of your hair. Then, using the pads of your fingers, work the oil into your scalp, using circular motions. Slow, deliberate movements are relaxing while steady but vigorous movement helps enhance energy and circulation. Cover your entire scalp, all the way down the sides to your ears and at the back to your neck. Leave the oil on for at least 30-60 minutes, longer if you can. If you like, you can dip a towel in hot water, wring it out, and wrap it around your head after your massage for added conditioning and softening of hair. You can even leave the oil on overnight—place a thick towel over your pillow to protect your linens. Shampoo out with a gentle, natural shampoo

Coconut oil vs. jojoba oil for hair?

Giggly_Gir

I've heard so many good things about using coconut oil and jojoba oil for a hair mask, so I think I'm finally going to order some organic jojoba oil and organic extra virgin coconut oil to try. But I was just wondering if one is significantly better or more effective than the other? I know it depends, I just wasn't sure if there was a clear winner between the two.

Also, this might sound like a dumb question, but I heard that jojoba oil was the closest to human sebum. Does this mean that if I use it on my scalp or my skin, that my oil glands will compensate by producing less oil? Because I definitely don't want that!

Thanks in advance! :)

Answer
Have you tried Argan Oil? Since discovering it, I don't have to spend money on a bunch of conditioners, etc. anymore...and I used to spend a lot. With the Argan Oil, I just put a small dot in the palm of my hands, rub them together and then run my them through my hair (not scalp) . makes my long hair shiny and smoother...and if I use a curling iron, the curls are shiny and gorgeous. I got it at Sally...I didn't buy the spray bottle, I got the bottle that kind of pours out through a tiny opening. A tiny dot goes a looooong way and you don't want to be greasy.

jojoba oil vs coconut oil vs argan oil for super damaged hair?

meilin69

which one works better? i might mix them with grapeseed oil and olive oil that i already have.

Answer
For my hair coconut oil works great, especially for treating split ends. I always use it on dry hair and leave it for at least 30 minutes. I know argan oil is very good too, thought I personally choose coconut oil. But I think it depends on the hair type you have.

where to buy nutiva coconut oil online?

Answer
Year ago I was think where to get it. I decided to order it online. eBay was good choice, but I choose Amazon because of cheap price.

If you go organic, you're not going to lose much if anything from brand to brand. My only suggestion is to utilize another organic oil in conjunction with the coconut oil for better results when it comes to skin and hair care. My oil of choice is almond- . The two combined are a double whammy! Hair, skin...it's a great additive or alternative in each case. The benefits are so...

Coconut Oil: Good or Bad?

Southern B

Hey everyone!

I was listening to the CDs from Dr. Andrew Weil this weekend and I was confused about something he mentioned about Coconut Oil. He said people should avoid eating anything prepared with CO because it is high in saturated fats and will pose health risks.

This confuses me greatly beacuse I have been told by many sources that CO is an EXCELLENT source of Omega 3 and essential fatty acids. I have been told to eat a tablespoon up to 5 times daily and use it externally as well as cook extensively with it. I have only been using the extra virgin, non refined CO because I like the coconutty taste and smell. Plus the EVCO has more health benefits. I use a lot of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) on a regular basis because of the healthy aspects of it as well.

What is confusing me is that saturated fats should be avoided, yes, but I understand that EVCO is a medium-chain saturated fat and that it is digested differently in the body than the other type of saturated fats like in animal products. We eat normal amounts of meat and greater amounts of whole grains and vegetables. I thought that because CO was vegetable and not animal, then it would be a better source of EFAs.

Dr. Weil also states that Canola Oil is better for you for cooking with. I have heard the complete opposite! Of course Olive Oil is preferred over most others, but I am wondering if Dr. Weil is confusing Canola Oil and Coconut Oil?

Can anyone shed some light on this subject? I don't want to give up my EVCO if I can help it. I have 160 different ways to use CO and they all seem beneficial so far.

Thanks!!

Answer
I don't know who Dr. Weil is, but if you have represented his claims accurately, he has no idea what he is talking about. Canola oil, which is produced from genetically modified rapeseed, is one of the worst of the "edible" oils that you can put in your body, especially when used in any kind of cooking other than baking. It converts readily to toxic substances when subjected to the heat used for sauteeing and frying.

There is a growing body of evidence that refutes the theory that natural saturated fats are any less healthy than unsaturated fats, when consumed in moderation. There is also now a damning body of evidence that reveals artificial, hydrogenated fats like margarine and shortening to be extremely unhealthy.

There is nothing wrong with eating coconut oil, either raw or cooked. In fact, it is one of the more beneficial fats you can consume, including when used for frying. Other healthy fats include olive oils, grapeseed oil and, for high-temperature frying, peanut oil and pure, non-hydrogenated lard (hard to find in regular grocery stores).

If you want to avoid the health problems that have been associated with saturated fats in the junk science community and popular lore for the last 50 years, you need to do two things:

1) Eat a diet based on whole foods, avoiding sugars and other simple carbohydrates, and keep your calorie intake low enough to avoid gaining excessive body fat.

2) Get a minimum of 45 minutes of cardio endurance exercise 4 days a week. Muscle strength training is also beneficial, but cardio training is more important for general health and fitness.

If you do these things, you don't need to worry about how much saturated fat or cholesterol you consume. Eat as much shrimp sauteed in butter with avocado sauce as you like. Get rid of your canola and soy oils and stick with healthy fats, whether saturated or unsaturated, vegetable or animal.

how good is coconut oil for cooking?

Steve N

Answer
Coconut oil is full of saturated fat. Normally this statement would scare anyone off from ever considering coconut oil to be a health food.

The truth is, saturated fat has gotten a really bad reputation lately as being nothing but unhealthy for our bodies. While, this may be true of most saturated fats, coconut oil is different.

The fat in coconut oil has a unique property that actual causes it to have both antimicrobial and anticancer effects in the body. Coconut oil is also used to treat thyroid conditions and aid in weight loss.

It is a mistake to assume that every type of saturated fat leads to heart disease.

The difference between the saturated fat in coconut oil and the saturated fat in other types of food is that coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid while the rest are long chain fatty acids.

This is a big deal because medium chain fatty acids, also known as lauric acid, actually help to reduce heart disease and atherosclerosis.

Lauric acid is specifically known for its antimicrobial attributes. Lauric acid can be turned into monolaurin by our bodies, which is both anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Monolaurin also helps to destroy lipid coated viruses, which include HIV, herpes, cytomegalovirus and influenza.

Keep in mind that not all coconut oil is healthy, hydrogenated coconut oil is just as dangerous to your health as other trans-fats. What you need to look for is unprocessed coconut oil in order to reap the health benefits.

In addition to the great benefits that come with using coconut oil for your food, is the nourishment you could provide to your skin by using it as a daily lotion or face moisturizer.

With coconut oil, you will be able to give your skin a completely healthy and chemical-free treatment on a daily basis that won't clog up your pores.

One brand I highly recommend is Nuvita organic coconut oil. It is USDA certified organic, and produced as extra-virgin.

How should I take coconut oil?

Toni_Baby

I'm tryna take 3 tbl spoons a day. Is it ok to mix it with stuff? I just took it out the jar. It was thick and not good lol...Will I still get the same benefits it has if I mix it with other foods. Like yogurt or something

Answer
How much coconut oil should you take ?

Researchers state that the optimal amount for an adult is between 3 and 4 tablespoons per day. This equates to the amount of medium chain fatty acids a nursing child would consume in one day from mother's milk. It is best to use coconut oil three times a day at meal times. We recommend that you begin with a smaller amount and build up to the recommended dosage if necessary.

Coconut oil is one of the most stable oils you can buy. It does not turn rancid easily. It does not attack your arteries. In fact, coconut oil was one of the foods Weston Price studied in his journeys. He discovered that the coconut was considered, by the local populations, a medicine food. He found that those civilizations that consumed coconut regularly had no knowledge of cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Let’s take a look at the healing properties of coconut oil:

Coconut oil is antiviral, antifungal (kills yeast too) and antibacterial. It attacks and kills viruses that have a lipid (fatty) coating, such as herpes, HIV, hepatitis C, the flu, and mononucleosis. It kills the bacteria that cause pneumonia, sore throats, dental cavities, urinary tract infections, meningitis, gonorrhea, food poisoning, pneumonia, and many, many more bacterial infections. It kills the fungus/yeast infections that cause candida, ringworm, athletes foot, thrush, jock itch, diaper rash and more.
Coconut oil is called the "low fat" fat. It actually acts like a carbohydrate in that it is quickly broken down in the liver and used as quick energy. It is NOT stored like other fats. It boosts one’s energy and endurance. Many athletes use it blended into their drinks. It also supports thyroid function and increases your metabolism (great if you want to lose weight).
Coconut oil improves digestion and absorption of fat soluble vitamins, minerals (especially calcium and magnesium), and amino acids. It improves the body’s use of blood glucose and improves insulin secretion and absorption (great for type II diabetes). In fact, many diabetics (type I and type II) use it to reduce their symptoms. One’s risk of diabetes decreases with regular use of coconuts and coconut oil. And as we already mentioned, cooking with coconut oil does not create any harmful byproducts.
Coconut oil helps the body heal and repair faster. It aids and supports immune function, protecting us from a variety of cancers.
Coconut oil, contrary to much hubbub, is good for your heart. It keeps our blood platelets from sticking together (and causing dangerous clots). Regular users of coconut oils have a much lower chance of atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries), arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and strokes. Coconut oil can lower your blood pressure.
Coconut oil is a natural antioxidant. It protects the body from free radical damage and prevents premature aging and degenerative diseases.
Finally, coconut oil is the best massage oil on the planet. What it does to your skin, you simply have to witness. It forms a barrier against infections, softens and moisturizes your skin, and prevents wrinkling, sagging, and age spots. It promotes healthy hair and complexion, protects from any damaging UV rays.

Does anyone have a recipe for granola?

Q. I am looking for a recipe for granola with crunchy clusters, but I will take any granola recipes. I would like recipes with less sugar. Thanks.

Answer
GRANOLA CLUSTERS
6 cups uncooked oats
1 cup shredded, sweetened coconut
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup powdered milk
2 Tbsp cinnamon
1 tsp powdered ginger
1 tsp cardamom
3/4 tsp. salt
2/3 cup light olive oil
3/4 cup dark corn syrup
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
2 Tbsp. vanilla extract
1 Tbsp. coconut flavoring
1 tsp almond extract
1 Tbsp. walnut flavoring
1 Tbsp. maple extract
1 tsp orange extract

1. Preheat oven to 300. Cover a large baking sheet (13×9) with a silpat, generous coat of oil, or parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, combine oats through salt and mix.

3. In a saucepan heat oil, honey and corn syrup until just warm. Alternately, heat this mixure in microwave-proof bowl for 1-2 minutes in the microwave, until warm. Mix flavorings and extracts into honey mixture.

4. Pour honey mixture over oat mixture and stir well. Spread on prepared cookie sheet and bake for 45-50 minutes, stirring every 20 minutes or so. When you remove from the oven, “tamp down” the granola into a compact layer. This makes the formation of granola clusters easier. Let cool, break large clumps into pieces, and store in an airtight container or sturdy zip-lock bags.

HONEY NUT GRANOLA

2 12/ c. uncooked oats
1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 c. unprocessed bran or wheat germ
1/2 c. sunflower seeds
1/3 c. honey
1/3 c. melted butter
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine all ingredients together. Mix well. Place on an ungreased 9 x 15 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove and put on a cookie sheet. Let cool, then break up and serve.

Which is the worst oil to consume ? Peanut or Palm ?

Phil A

Or is there an oil even worse for your body ?
ps, is olive oil the best for you ?

Answer
Coconut oil is the healthiest in the world.

"In a study published in 1981, the populations of two South Pacific islands were examined over a period of time starting in the 1960s, before western foods were prevalent in the diets of either culture. The study was designed to investigate the relative effects of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol in determining serum cholesterol levels. Coconuts were practically a staple in the diets, with up to 60% of their caloric intake coming from the saturated fat of coconut oil. The study found very healthy people who were relatively free from the modern diseases of western cultures, including obesity and heart disease. Their conclusion: "Vascular disease is uncommon in both populations and there is no evidence of the high saturated fat intake having a harmful effect in these populations."

Palm oil is also very healthy.

"Studies show that adding palm oil into the diet can remove plaque build up in arteries and therefore, reverse the process of atherosclerosis. This has been demonstrated in both animal and human studies."

Saturated fats are the most stable fats, followed by monounsaturated fats and lastly polyunsaturated fats. Polyunsaturated fats are very unstable, easy to oxidise and goes rancid very quickly. Unstable oils lead to oxidisation which leads to inflammation and this is a leading factor of heart disease and other degenerative diseases.

>>>http://www.truthaboutabs.com/cholesterol-myths.html

The worst fats are hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil aka transfat. When healthy oils are processed through bubbling hydrogen using temperatures of up to 410F (210C), un-natural fatty acids are created called trans-fatty acids. Trans-fatty acids are one of the most toxic wastes that can be inside your body and also can block your body from using essential fatty acids. This type of fat is found in approx 40% of grocery store items.

Oil is ruined when cooked above it's smoking point and it begins to degrade, has an acrid smell and taste and the smoke forms substances that may be carcinogens (cancer causing agents).

GOOD:

Lard - 41% saturated fatty acids (SFA), 47% monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) and 11% polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), making it highly heat stable. Smoking point - 370F (182C)

Tallow - 52% SFA, 44% MUFA, and 4% PUFA, tallow is also exceptionally heat stable. Smoking point 420F (215C)

Coconut Oil - 92% SFA, 6% MUFA, and 2% PUFA - highly heat-stable and highly shelf-stable. Smoking point - 350F (177C)

Palm Oil - With 50% SFA, 40% MUFA, and 10% PUFA. - high level of natural antioxidants. Smoking point - 455F (235C)

Olive Oil - 14% SFA, 75% MUFA, and 11% PUFA. - very unsaturated...should only be subjected to very low heat, if any heat at all. The smoke point of extra virgin olive oil is rated as low as 200F (93C). Light olive oil has the highest rating, going as high as 450F (232C)

Macadamia Oil: 12.5% SFA, 84% MUFA, and 3.5% PUFA...contains high amounts of natural antioxidants. Smoking point of 390 F (199C)

Butter - 63% SFA, 26% MUFA, and 4% PUFA. Avoid margarine as this spread is ONE MOLECULE from being PLASTIC! Smoking point - 350F (177C)

Toasted Sesame Oil - 14% SFA, 43% MUFA and 43% PUFA. - highly unsaturated but has a high smoke point and lots of antioxidants to make it a relatively stable fat. Smoking point - 410F (210C)

AVOID:

Hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oils - transfatty acids

Canola Oil - 6% SFA, 62% MUFA and 32% PUFA. Too much polyunsaturated fat, wrong kind of omega-3 content and 80% of canola is genetically modified.

Flaxseed Oil - Flaxseed oil is highly unstable and has a very short shelf life.

Vegetable Oils (Corn, Safflower, Sunflower, etc) - very unstable due to their highly polyunsaturated oil.

Peanut Oil 18% SFA, 49% MUFA and 33% PUFA - Too much polyunsaturated fat.

is olive oil really the healthiest oil?

I heart be

or are there healthier oils out there? thanks!

Answer
The healthiest oil in the world is coconut oil with 92% saturated fat. Saturated fat is the most stable and least prone to inflammation and oxidation. Monounsaturated fats are more stable than polyunsaturated fats, yet not as stable as saturated fats. Polyunsaturated oil is very easy to oxidise and goes rancid very quickly. A good article to explain the chemistry of fats below.** Inflammation and oxidation leads to heart disease. My favourite oil is macadamia oil. It's delicious with a high smoke point. :)

"Diets in People with the Lowest Risk of Heart Disease – Masai, Inuit, Rendille, Todelau

The diet of the Maasai tribe in Kenya and northern Tanzania consists of meat, milk, and blood from cattle. It is 66 percent saturated fat.

The diet of Inuit Eskimos in the Artic, consisting largely of whale meat and blubber, is 75 percent saturated fat; and they live long healthy lives free of heart disease and cancer.

The Rendille tribe in the Kaisut Desert in NE Kenya subsist on camel milk and meat, and a mixture of camel milk and blood, known as "Banjo." Their diet is 63 percent saturated fat.

The Tokelau live well, without cardiologists, on three atoll islands that are now a territory of New Zealand. Their diet consists of fish and coconuts, which is 60 percent saturated fat.

Like these groups of people around the world, breast-fed infants in developed first-world countries also have a diet that is high in saturated fats. The fat in human mother’s milk is 54 percent saturated fat."

Toasted Sesame Oil - 14% SFA, 43% MUFA and 43% PUFA. - highly unsaturated but has a high smoke point and lots of antioxidants to make it a relatively stable fat. Smoking point - 410F (210C)

AVOID:

Canola Oil - 6% SFA, 62% MUFA and 32% PUFA - too much polyunsaturated fat, wrong kind of omega-3 content and 80% of canola is genetically modified.

Flaxseed Oil - highly unstable and has a very short shelf life.

The Hidden Truth About "Reducing Your Cholesterol" You may be surprised at the REAL causes of heart disease -- and it's NOT saturated fat or cholesterol:

Giuseppe: In the US, there is a heart attack every 35 seconds. Americans eat too much Fructose Corn Syrup and transfat and vegetable oils - inflammation and oxidation central. Take a look at the chemistry of fats and the countries who have low to no heart disease. The French eat plenty of saturated fat and has the lowest heart attack rate in the western world. Conventional medicine scratches their head and calls it the French Parodox as it doesn't fit their cholesterol hypothesis (still a hypothesis after half a century). As 75% who have a heart attack have normal cholesterol levels, you want to brush up on the truth or you will be the victim of conventional medicine. Answer
Liquid / Gel Soap

2 cups soap flakes or grated bar soap
1/2 gallon water
2 tbsp glycerin
Mix ingredients together in a large pot or dutch oven. Set over low heat, stirring occasionally until the soap has dissolved. Transfer to a jar and cover tightly. For a less thick gel soap, use 1 gallon of water.
Vanilla and Almond Soap

This soap is great for removing dirt and oil from the skin without drying. Vanilla gives it a delicious fragrance and the ground almonds provide a beautifully textured soap. (Makes one bar.)

1/3 cup whole almonds
1 4-ounce bar Castile soap
1/4 cup distilled water
1 tablespoon almond oil
1/8 teaspoon vanilla fragrance oil
Grind the almonds to a fine powder in a food processor or coffee grinder and set aside. Shred the soap and set aside. In a heavy saucepan bring the water to a boil; then reduce heat to a simmer; Remove the pan from the heat and add the almond powder, almond oil, and vanilla fragrance oil, stirring until well blended. Spoon the soap into a mold and let set for five hours or until hardened..

1 cup olive oil
1 cup coconut oil
1 cup melted tallow (animal fat)
2 tbsp lye (heaping) (*NOTE)
1/2 cup cold soft water
has been changed to:
8 oz weight olive oil
8 oz weight coconut oil
8 oz weight rendered tallow
3.49 oz weight sodium hydroxide (pure lye) Red Devil brand 100% lye (*NOTE)
9 fluid oz water
While wearing safety goggles and neoprene gloves, combine solid lye and liquid, stir well. Set aside and allow to cool (100° F to 125° F). This is best done outside while you are standing upwind.
Combine oils and heat gently. Once the fats and oils are melted allow the temperature to drop to 100° F to 125° F.

Combine lye solution and melted oils. Be careful not to splash while combining the mixtures. Stir until the mixture traces. If tracing takes more than 15 minutes, which it often does, stir for the first 15 minutes, then stir for 5 minutes at 15 minute intervals. Tracing looks like a slightly thickened custard, not instant pudding but a cooked custard. It will support a drop, or your stir marks for several seconds. Once tracing occur s...

Pour raw soap into your prepared molds. After a few days the soap can be turned out of the mold. If the soap is very soft, allow it to cure for a few days to firm the outside.

Cut soap into bars and set the bars out to cure and dry. This will allow the bar to firm and finish saponification. Place the bars on something that will allow them to breathe.

Note: If you don't want to mess with tallow and lye, you can substitute shavings from any white unscented soap.

Mechanic's Hand Cleanser

Grind up a bar or two of your soap...

* 1 c. borax
* 1-2 t. pure turpentine
* 1 t. sweet orange essential oil

With very clean hands, work the turpentine and essential oil into the borax until there are no lumps left, then work into the soap. Keep it in a wide-mouthed jar or tin that's easy for him to open when his hands are greasy, and which you won't mind getting black on the outside. Don't forget to put a nail brush and pumice stone out with the hand cleanser.

Which oil is beter on hair Virgin Coconut oil or Baby oil?

Coconut Oil?

Damian

I have been told, as well as read that Coconut Oil is the best oil to use, helps weightloss, and is the best to cook with..... but then also read its high in saturated fats, and is bad for you.

Now I'm confused!

Can I have a little more info

Answer
Coconut oil is very good for you... IF you get the right kind! You MUST get the VIRGIN coconut oil as that oil has not been through the processing that other coconut oil has gone though. The other kind is LOADED with saturated fats, where as the virgin kind has next to none. Coconut oil has medium chain fatty acids, which is very beneficial for you.

"Coconut oil is comprised of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), also called medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs.

Coconut oil is nature's richest source of these healthy MCFAs.

By contrast, most common vegetable or seed oils are comprised of long chain fatty acids (LCFAs), also known as long-chain triglycerides or LCTs.

There are several reasons to explain why long-chain fatty acids are not as healthy for you as the MCFAs in coconut oil:

LCFAs are difficult for the body to break down -- they must be packaged with lipoproteins or carrier proteins and require special enzymes for digestion.

LCFAs put more strain on the pancreas, the liver and the entire digestive system.

LCFAs are predominantly stored in the body as fat. (That's why most people buy into the myth that fats are automatically "fattening".)

LCFAs can be deposited within arteries in lipid forms such as cholesterol.

On the other hand, however, the MCFAs in coconut oil are healthier, because:

MCFAs are smaller. They permeate cell membranes easily, and do not require lipoproteins or special enzymes to be utilized effectively by your body.

MCFAs are easily digested, thus putting less strain on your digestive system. This is especially important for those of you with digestive or metabolic concerns.

MCFAs are sent directly to your liver, where they are immediately converted into energy rather than being stored as fat.

MCFAs in coconut oil can actually help stimulate your body's metabolism, leading to weight loss. "

Like I said though, you must get the virgin coconut oil. You can find it in your local health food store. Good luck!

Is virgin coconut oil good for your skin and hair?

ginabobina

Will it clog pores, and does it even get absorbed? Benefits short term and long term would be appreciated. Thanks

Answer
Coconut oil is great for hair! I use it in my hair everyday! I don't know if it works on skin though because I don't use it on my skin. Coconut oil will get absorbed in your hair, and it will also penetrate your hair shaft. I use Organix Coconut products. The Organix Coconut products smell amazing and they work outstanding on my naturally wavy hair. I've even been told that my hair looks longer. Here is the link. http://beautypureandsimple.com/coconutmilk.asp

I also use the Proclaim Coconut Hair oil from Sally's. http://www.sallybeauty.com/Coconut-Oil-Conditioner/PROCLM24,default,pd.html

Can I just eat a spoonful of coconut oil?

Saturn's E

I heard Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr eats coconut oil with her foods and sometimes takes a spoonful of it. That sounded insane, but I have a glass of organic coconut oil I use as a moisturizer at night for my skin and hair. I had some on my finger and licked it, and it has a strange flavor, but isn't so bad. Can I eat a spoonful of this? If it's healthy then it could moisturize my body from the inside out, right?

Answer
I've seen homemade toothpaste recipes that call for coconut oil. I can't imagine eating a spoonful of it though. Put it on bread, use it iin baking, melt it for use in salad dressings. The smoke point is too low for frying, it just sticks.
You might look it up on wikipedia and see wht the benefits of saturated vegetable fats are.

Aloe Vera gel and Coconut oil for acne?

mckenzie

Ok so would using both of these on my face help is you know heal. Kinda get rid of pimples and help make the dark spots go away?? And since its gel I could put that on first and then use the coconut oil since it kinda clogs your pores or would that be dumb??? Pleas no hate I just want to know if it would help or if using it would be a waste of time.. btw I'm 13 if that makes any difference with the skin type or what ever.

Answer
Aloe Vera is better. You can use toothpaste which is effective and fast. Here are some tips that might be helpful:
1) Tea Tree Oil
2) Lemon juice
3) Apple cider vinegar
4) Bamboo extract or Sarna lotion – good for rosacea, psoriasis, eczema
5) Bio Oil or BB cream for dark spots or scars

Applied lemon juice or apple cider vinegar to face or you can drink it through using it in water a few drops a day. Will help with both acne, and scars as well. Another way you can get rid of acne is by taking bamboo extract something I started when I had the problem really does work. Hope this works for you.

OR: Here are seven best methods to clear up blemishes.

Tea-Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is a popular home remedy for acne. An essential oil is diluted and applied topically to acne lesions. How is tea tree oil believed to work? Tea tree oil contains a constituent called terpinen-4-ol that's thought to be responsible for most of tea tree oil's anti-bacterial activity. Because tea tree oil can kill bacteria, applying topical tea tree oil to acne lesions is believed to kill Propionibacterium acnes, the skin-dwelling bacteria involved in acne.To treat mild, occasional breakouts.
How it works: Distilled from the leaves of an Australian shrub, tea-tree oil contains antibacterial and anti-microbial compounds called terpenoids that help kill the bacteria that, when trapped behind oil in a plugged pore, lead to acne breakouts. Try Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick ($8, burtsbees.com). A roller-ball tube makes for easy application.Studies testing tea-tree oil against the gold-standard acne treatment, benzoyl peroxide, have shown that while the latter works more quickly, tea-tree oil is equally effective over time. And it results in fewer annoying side effects—namely, dryness and redness.

Sulfur
If you have sensitive skin.
How it works: A time-tested, gentle acne fighter, sulfur “acts like a sponge to draw oil out of blocked pores,”. This dries up pimples and keeps sebum production in check, helping to prevent future blemishes. Sulfur has a distinct smell—think rotten eggs. Most preparations that use it contain a masking fragrance. However, to play it safe (and avoid scaring off coworkers), apply these products at night.

Salicylic Acid
To treat and soothe red, inflamed blemishes.Salicylic acid can have a calming, anti-inflammatory effect on pimples. “It also breaks down the ‘cement’ between cells in clogged pores to help unplug them,”
Salicylic acid is less irritating than more potent treatments, so it may be better for those with dry skin. It also tends to work well on stubborn blackheads.

Retinoids
Nightly to prevent breakouts.
How they work: Retinoids, which include over-the-counter retinol and prescription-strength Retin-A, reduce acne by altering the oil chemistry on the skin. “They help stop dense sebum from getting stuck within the pores,” says Gross. Without oil deposits, bacteria can’t grow and cause blemishes. Since retinoids can make skin sensitive to the sun, doctors recommend using them at night (and being diligent about wearing sunscreen during the day). To avoid irritation, apply every other evening to start, gradually working up to nightly use. Bonus benefit: Retinoids have been shown to increase collagen production and plump fine lines, making them a good choice if you’re dealing with acne and wrinkles.

Blue-Light Therapy
If you want the latest preventive treatment—and don’t mind plunking down some cash for it.
How it works: Once or twice a week, you use a handheld device to aim a beam of blue light onto your skin. “Its wavelength hits and kills acne-causing bacteria,” so any brewing pimples never come to the surface. This method will not address existing blemishes. Doctors typically suggest combining blue-light therapy with other remedies, such as topical treatments. To make things easy, consider a blue-light device that comes in a kit. At-home devices are smart alternatives to multiple costly treatments at a doctor’s office.

Oral Antibiotics
If you experience painful bumps below the skin surface and your pimples leave lasting marks. “Oral antibiotics act from the inside to kill the bacteria that cause acne,” says Keri. They also reduce the inflammation associated with pimples, so deep-seated blemishes hurt less and leave fewer scars.

Doctors usually prescribe them to get a severe condition under control and may then switch to topical treatments. Some antibiotics must be taken on an empty stomach, so read the label carefully.

I don't even dye my hair. I thought it may just be frizzy, but upon further inspection it looks like it's broken hair. It's breaking around my bangs as well. I don't wear ponytails that much and when I do, it's with an elastic with no metal band on it and it's never that tight. Help?

Sugar Cook

This is very embarressing but I need some help. My grandma that lives next door has my cousins live with her. They can't seem to get rid of head lice. Everytime they do it just comes back. They have tried all sorts of treatments and I want to visit with my grandma but I can't because i am afraid I will get the nasty little bugs. Please help me. Does any one have any natural treatments that doesn't include those over counter medicines. My grandma has spent a lot of money on those treatments and they don't work. Please help me to help them. I know this is disgusting but it is the only way I can get answers. Thank you so much!

and what do i do about my friend with lice. She's had them for ages and always denies it but iv'e seen them crawling in her hair and she lives down the street so i cant really avoid her what do i say
i tried olive oil

Answer
1. Buy a jar of extra virgin organic coconut oil.
2. Melt about two dessert spoonfuls of the solidified oil and let it cool a bit. You don't want to burn your scalp.
3. Apply the oil liberally to your scalp.
4. Massage well into your scalp.
5. Make sure that you put the oil on your hands and work it through the length of hair.
6. Wrap your hair in the plastic wrap you use to cover food, or wear a shower cap. If you're sharing a house and you don't want people to see you looking so weird, you can skip that step.
7. It's best to do this at night so that you can wash your hair next morning.
8. After shampooing your hair, use one of those fine-toothed combs to remove dead lice and any eggs next morning.
9. Coconut oil kills lice by suffocating them and their eggs. See External Links for more details.

Tips

* Use top quality coconut oil. One jar will last for ages. Besides now being recognised as a bone fide treatment for head lice, coconut oil has endless other health benefits. See External Links for details.
* Put an old towel on your pillow so that the oil doesn't stain your pillow cases.

Warnings

* You can be seduced to buy all sorts of shampoos, conditioners and treatments used by reputable organizations. Your coconut oil jar will be enough to kill all the lice in your family, and you can use it for other things.

What can I do with Coconut Milk?

RogerFeder

What can I do with it? I'm doing a keto diet right now, I need to lose like 10 pounds, currently 160, 5'10.
I was wondering if I could like marinate chicken breast with coconut milk and bake it? I don't really marinate my chicken breast, I normally just bake it plain. Can I use the milk for making scramble eggs? How about coconut oil? Can I use that for my salad and stuff? Thanks!

Answer
try this yummy filipino dessert:

Maja Blanca (Coconut Cake)

1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup sugar/maple syrup
1/4 cup water
2 cups coconut milk
1 can pineapple or corn kernels (i prefer corn kernels)

Mix cornstarch and sugar in a bowl. Add water and coconut. In a saucepan, bring mixture to a boil and stirring constantly. When misture is starting to thicken, pour in the corn kernels. Boil for 5 minutes, until the starch is cooked. Pour into a cake pan (or any bowl with smooth sides) and let cool.

Uhmm this is really yummy!!!!

What to eat on a Keto diet?

Kenny

Started yesterday.. am 175 pounds and 17 years old.

All I've been eating is Turkey, Eggs, Tunafish, Mayo with eggs or tuna, only drinking water, had 2 hot dogs today (not sure if that ruined it), Ham and Yogurt..

What cheese is alright to eat on this diet?
Can I still have veggies on this diet? Not sure if veggies have a lot of carbs..

I have a bad bad taste in mouth and stomach feels weird-ish.. not sure if that's good or bad though..
or if I'm in keto yet...
- Also have been having coffee.. with cream only though. No sugar..

Answer
You really need to invest some times studying ketogenic diets before you try that. You are not eating a ketogenic diet. A keto diet is very moderate protein, HIGH FAT -- MOSTLY FAT. What you listed is too much lean protein. That's low-carb but it's not ketogenic. And it'll probably take much more than two days to get into ketosis even when you're doing it right.

The trick is to consume fat without consuming too much protein. Shoot for no more than maybe 75 - 100 grams of protein a day, and nearly all the rest being fat. Some things to eat -- coconut oil and coconut butter, cream cheese, cream, sour cream, butter, plentiful use of olive oil, macadamia nuts, avocados, olives, and fatty cuts of meat (but not too much, or you'll get too much protein). Bacon and sausage are good for example. Eggs are great but it's the yolk not the whites that you really want. Some people will scramble up say 3 eggs but throw out the whites of two.

Actually see link below, that's an excellent article.

I read somewhere that it is very good for you & might also make you lose weight. Was wondering if anyone knew any benefits from use of coconut oil?

Answer
Health Benefits of Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is different from other oils commonly used in America. Most American oils are made from seeds like soybeans, canola (rapeseeds), almonds, sesame seeds, safflower seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. These seed oils are predominately made of triglycerides containing long chain fatty acids. To be digested, these long chain fatty acids need to be emulsified by bile salts. Bile salts are produced by the liver, stored in the gall bladder and dumped into the small intestine as needed. They are the emulsifying agents that draw the fats into the aqueous food solutions of the intestinal tract where lipase, a digestive enzyme, can work on them. Next, the long chain fatty acids are broken down into carbon chains made of 14 carbon atoms. This is the standard “energy storage unit” for the body. We call it body fat. All excess carbohydrates in the diet are also converted into these 14 carbon chain triglycerides. They are bound to HDL and LDL carriers in the bloodstream and then transported into storage.

Since coconut oil contains mostly 8,10,and 12 carbon chain triglycerides (medium chain triglycerides), instead of being digested and traveling in the blood stream as explained above, these medium chain fatty acids are absorbed into the portal vein and transported directly into the liver without requiring lipase or bile salts for digestion. In the liver, these medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) support the immune system and help to cleanse the body of pathogens, toxins, etc. These supportive actions continue as the MCTs travel through the lymphatic system to the rest of the body.

Since the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil do not travel in the blood stream they have never been shown to contribute to heart disease, provided the oil has not been hydrogenated. People without gall bladders or who cannot digest food well, especially people who cannot digest fats (such as people with cystic fibrosis) can and will thrive on coconut oil. Doctors doing research have known for a long time that the elderly, invalids and the very young thrive on formulas that contain coconut oil. Products like baby formula and Ensure use to be made with coconut oil. Sadly, even these items have fallen victim to the propaganda we have received over the last 50 years.

As the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil travel throughout the body they are actually anti microbial compounds. For example, Lauric acid, which makes up 48-57% of coconut oil, becomes 2 mono-lauren in the gut. 2-mono-lauren dissolves the lipid envelope that protects most pathogenic bacteria and viruses. It also attacks pathogenic yeast and parasites. Lauric acid contained in a human mother's breast milk is one of the major reasons nursing infants have a high resistance to getting sick. Lauric acid in the diet will have the same effect, regardless of age. Its anti microbial properties have been helping people for thousands of years.

Coconut oil, because it is smaller than the standard storage unit, is burned for energy rather than stored. This tends to increase the bodies metabolism. People with under-active thyroid glands often discover their basal temperature becomes normal from coconut oil use, especially when combined with a health diet and life-style.. Elderly Americans and many others with low energy often notice they have energy again and a sense of well-being they did not realize they had lost. And, unlike other energy the cell receives, medium chain fatty acids do not require insulin. Most people in the U.S. have some degree of insulin resistance. Many people, as they age, even though they are eating, do not feel they are getting energy from their food. The reason for many people is insulin resistance. The good news is that if a person has coconut oil or coconut products in their diet, the fats will be used as energy and that energy is not dependent on the insulin system working. Therefore, diabetics can get good energy into their cells and people who take naps, or think they need naps in the middle of the afternoon, have energy again. Low Carb dieters, as well, can eat their low carbohydrate meals, but have the energy they would otherwise have received from carbohydrates.

Lastly, on the skin, the medium chain fatty acids in the coconut oil are identical to the medium chain fatty acids found in sebum. Normal flora that lives on our skin and keeps it healthy will actually live on the glycerol unit of the triglycerides, creating free fatty acids identical to those found in sebum. This allows the skin to have a slightly acidic pH ideal for keeping pathogens away and keeping the skin healthy. For people with dandruff or red spots on their scalp, you just douse the scalp with coconut oil and leave it for about 20 minutes. Then shampoo. You will need to shampoo at least twice. This works better than tea tree oil shampoo from the health food store or anything else you have probably tried. If you have red spots on your skin try it there as well. If you need a little more oomph, add a drop or two of lemon or lavender essential oil to the coconut oil. Many people get out of the shower and reach for their little pot of coconut oil. They just dab it on and spread it all over, very lightly. A number of customers have discovered that if they do this they eventually do not have to use deodorant.
The highest quality coconut oil, in our opinion is oil that is raw, with a very low moisture content, a low free fatty acid content, and therefore a long shelf-life. The oil is best when packaged in glass as coconut oil can dissolve and absorb plasticizers. Below are companies who carry a coconut oil that fits this criteria:

Wilderness Family Naturals
A brand called Fresh Shores that is very good on Dr. Mercola's website
Jigsaw Health
Radiant Life Catalog
Power Hour

Lector's G

I have been using Nutiva (organic, unrefined, no hexane etc...) Coconut Oil on my face for acne for about a week. I have NEVER had so much acne in my life. I look like a boy in middle school. Is this my skin purging and getting rid of toxins, or is this oil not good for my face? Which is more likely?
I am wanting to get rid of acne. I am probably very toxic.

Answer

Are Pure coconut oil and Extra Virgin coconut oil the same?

yeah

Is Extra Virgin coconut oil the exact same as Pure coconut oil, or is it better?

Any of You know for sure?

Thanks :)

Answer
Pure coconut oil is the same as virgin coconut oil. Extra virgin is the same and is basically just a term used to ride on the olive oil industry's coattails.

"Don't be mislead by the term "extra virgin" when used in conjunction with coconut oil. This term is borrowed from the olive oil industry and there is no such product or existing standard that can be applied to coconut oil production. If you see the term "extra virgin" be assured that it is simply a marketing ploy to encourage you to believe that the oil has something more to offer than virgin coconut oil."

Methods of processing are wet centrifuged (cold), dry expeller pressed, dry bleached, and wet fermented. http://nutiva.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/raw-coco-poster.pdf

Coconut oil and weight loss?

Candace

Im a teenager and have been reading alot that it isn't very good to be SUPER picky on calories during your teen years or it could hurt your growth. I want to model so I can have money for a horse. I read somewhere that if you have three tablespoons of coconut oil a day it can help you loose weight? Is this myth or truth? If its true I'll add it to my schedule, my mom loves coconut oil for her skin and for her cooking. So we have tons of it!

Answer
Your kiddin me right!!! Coconut oil. I have heard it is good for the hair..yeah...but for losing weight...haha that is downright a myth.

Coconut oil is all saturated fat. WHich is bad for you..period!!!
So If I were you I stop looking for shortcuts and stick to what works. That is the combination of a healthy diet and good exercise at least 4 to 5 times a week for 30min least. You wanna model you say. I assume that you are not fat to begin with then. SO why do you wanna lose weight. THe industry is changing in case if you have not heard. THey do not take in anorexic looking models no more. Paris was the first to start doing that and it is the fashion capital of the world.

You are growing like you said, so eat lots of fruits and vegetables and lean meats. That will not only improve your health but your complexion and radiance of your skin. GOod Luck on getting your horse!!

Coconut oil for my hair?

Kdke

is it safe to use on your hair? i have bleach blonde hair (its all natural, ive never dyed/high lighted my hair).. and its pretty long, it comes down right below my boobs. i heard coconut oil is really good for make your hair shiny & soft as well as helping it grow. im trying to grow my hair out reallllly long. i havent used heat on it at all this summer! has anyone tried this?! i have the coconut oil already, so how should i use it ? before bed, in the shower, after shower? help please! if youve tried it let me know how it works & what its good for (: thanks!

Answer
Your hair is virgin, bleached blonde hair NATURAL, it should ALREADY BE SHINY & healthy silky, shiny, soft & smooth LIKE MY HAIR. I do not put oil on my hair. My grandma used coconut oil on hers, only to prevent lice from getting in her head, in Asia, many people do, it's normal, but she makes her own oil Soft shiny hair comes from: Good genes. Good hair care. You get more benefits eating fresh coconuts, drink the juice that came with it, when you cracked open a coconut, but hair oil only last on your hair until you wash them off again.
Washing less often, builds the natural oil your hair needs, to get them smoother, shinier, silkier, softer. Man-made products are just temporary, until you wash them again, and at the same time washing off the natural oil your hair NEEDS.

There are more hair oil on the shelf now, than 30-40 years ago, and it's because it is a billion dollar business! There are more hair loss now, too, than 30-40 years ago!

There are many hair oil brand out there, man-made oil, none is better than the other. It can very well even harm your hair, even causes hair loss, since you don't know exactly what kind of oil they say it is. In the lab, they add other ingredients that can prevent from spoiling.
Read the labels if they state that it contains like for fish oil supplements: "one or more of the following: Cod, English Whiting, Shark."

It does NOT make hair grow, it does not make hair thicker, it does help keep the hair moisturized, until you wash them again, that's about all it does, they're not glue to fix split ends, prevent, or reverse the damaged hair. Anything else they say on the label, it is to attract your attention. It is a billion dollar business and they do not give money back guarantee for damaged hair or hair loss due to 'abuse'.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra is ready to go on record saying that most manufacturers in the Rs 3,000-crore Indian cosmetics industry are rampantly misleading consumers with tall claims. This affliction goes beyond hair oils. FDA has found that from face creams to soaps and other items of personal care, cosmetics companies are taking the general public for a ride. The industry, of course, sees the whole issue differently.

Good grade coconut oil?

Tecpeds

I buy from nutiva now which tastes great and is not processed cold pressed and extra virgin without added chemicals and such but i saw carrington farms that seems to be just as good from what i read its the same price but at costco its half off and want to buy that but carrington farms uses expelled cold pressed for the coconuts and i believe that Nutiva uses the same way not sure is this really a better choice or does it not matter that its not cold pressed seeing that coconut oil is resistant to high temperatures. I know nutrients are lost the higher the temperature is but none the less i still think that a good quantity remains.

Answer
I really like Tropical Traditions coconut oil. It's really good quality oil. But i've used Nutiva too and it's really good too. Just be sure to buy virgin coconut oil, preferably cold pressed.
