Coconut Oil: Good or Bad?

Southern B

Hey everyone!

I was listening to the CDs from Dr. Andrew Weil this weekend and I was confused about something he mentioned about Coconut Oil. He said people should avoid eating anything prepared with CO because it is high in saturated fats and will pose health risks.

This confuses me greatly beacuse I have been told by many sources that CO is an EXCELLENT source of Omega 3 and essential fatty acids. I have been told to eat a tablespoon up to 5 times daily and use it externally as well as cook extensively with it. I have only been using the extra virgin, non refined CO because I like the coconutty taste and smell. Plus the EVCO has more health benefits. I use a lot of EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) on a regular basis because of the healthy aspects of it as well.

What is confusing me is that saturated fats should be avoided, yes, but I understand that EVCO is a medium-chain saturated fat and that it is digested differently in the body than the other type of saturated fats like in animal products. We eat normal amounts of meat and greater amounts of whole grains and vegetables. I thought that because CO was vegetable and not animal, then it would be a better source of EFAs.

Dr. Weil also states that Canola Oil is better for you for cooking with. I have heard the complete opposite! Of course Olive Oil is preferred over most others, but I am wondering if Dr. Weil is confusing Canola Oil and Coconut Oil?

Can anyone shed some light on this subject? I don't want to give up my EVCO if I can help it. I have 160 different ways to use CO and they all seem beneficial so far.

Thanks!!

Answer
I don't know who Dr. Weil is, but if you have represented his claims accurately, he has no idea what he is talking about. Canola oil, which is produced from genetically modified rapeseed, is one of the worst of the "edible" oils that you can put in your body, especially when used in any kind of cooking other than baking. It converts readily to toxic substances when subjected to the heat used for sauteeing and frying.

There is a growing body of evidence that refutes the theory that natural saturated fats are any less healthy than unsaturated fats, when consumed in moderation. There is also now a damning body of evidence that reveals artificial, hydrogenated fats like margarine and shortening to be extremely unhealthy.

There is nothing wrong with eating coconut oil, either raw or cooked. In fact, it is one of the more beneficial fats you can consume, including when used for frying. Other healthy fats include olive oils, grapeseed oil and, for high-temperature frying, peanut oil and pure, non-hydrogenated lard (hard to find in regular grocery stores).

If you want to avoid the health problems that have been associated with saturated fats in the junk science community and popular lore for the last 50 years, you need to do two things:

1) Eat a diet based on whole foods, avoiding sugars and other simple carbohydrates, and keep your calorie intake low enough to avoid gaining excessive body fat.

2) Get a minimum of 45 minutes of cardio endurance exercise 4 days a week. Muscle strength training is also beneficial, but cardio training is more important for general health and fitness.

If you do these things, you don't need to worry about how much saturated fat or cholesterol you consume. Eat as much shrimp sauteed in butter with avocado sauce as you like. Get rid of your canola and soy oils and stick with healthy fats, whether saturated or unsaturated, vegetable or animal.

How to cure KERATOSIS PILARIS?

JB

Please help me I need your advise on how to cure my skin decease, what kind of lotion need to put to remove or medicine,is it cause of eating chicken? what are the food that can help to remove this.

Answer
While there is no cure for keratosis pilaris, there are palliative treatments available. The efficacy of these treatment methods is directly related to the individual's commitment and consistency of use.

Creams containing the acid form of vitamin A, Tretinoin, have been shown to help. Most commonly sold under the trade name Retin-A, it is a topical retinoid medically approved in the treatment of acne. This medicine works by increasing the cell turnover rate of the outer layer of the skin, decreasing the amount of the keratin in the skin. As a result, the surface layer of the skin becomes thinner and pores are less likely to become blocked, reducing the occurrence of symptoms related to acne. While keratosis pilaris is not acne, some believe this action may be of benefit to those with KP as well.

Another retinoid that has the potential to help with keratosis pilaris is Adapalene.[7] Benefits include increased stability when applied in conjunction with other topical medications, such as benzoyl peroxide. Adapalene is a moderator of cellular differentiation, keratinization, and inflammatory processes, having both exfoliating and anti-inflammatory effects.

An alternative is the prescription medication Triamcinolone. Most commonly sold under the trade name Aristocort, Triamcinolone is a synthetic corticosteroid, compounded as a cream, which has been medically approved as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of eczema. As the action responsible for alleviating eczema symptoms is, as with retinoid creams, the reduction amount of keratin in pores, the effect of Triamcinolone on KP is expected to be similar.

As with Triamcinolone, Tretinoin or any other treatment, once therapy is discontinued, the condition reverts to its original state. However, skin treated with Tretinoin may take several weeks or more to revert to its pre-treatment condition, but may, at the same time, take several weeks or more to show optimal results, with the condition commonly worsening initially, as underlying keratin is brought to the surface of the skin. Tretinoin is considerably more expensive and dispensed in smaller quantities than Triamcinolone and other treatments. Although it may be the most effective treatment for keratosis pilaris, it is not considered the first line of treatment.[citation needed]

The condition is often dismissed outright by practitioners as being presently untreatable,[citation needed] giving mere moisturizing suggestions or reassurance that the condition will improve or cease with age, typically after 30. Ignorance, accompanied with the price, availability, quantity dispensed, time taken for optimal results to be achieved, more serious side-effects, adverse reactions, and worsening of the condition in the initial treatment phase - coupled with the cheaper, safer, and easier availability of other treatments - has hindered Tretinoin from showing its potential in the treatment of this condition.

Sulfur has been used for skin treatment predating modern medicine. Sulfur soaps, lotions, and exfoliants have been used successfully for treating KP. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) supplements used with some success often require dosage as high as 25g per day. Side effects can include thickening of hair and nails, and pale skin.

Exfoliation, intensive moisturizing cremes, lac-hydrin, creams, and lotions containing alpha hydroxy acids and urea may be used to temporarily improve the appearance and texture of affected skin.

Beta hydroxy acids may help improve the appearance and texture of the affected skin. Milk baths may provide some cosmetic improvement due to their containing lactic acid, a natural alpha hydroxy acid in milk. Sunlight is helpful as well. Coconut oil may also be helpful if applied to afflicted areas while in the shower. Scratching and picking at KP bumps causes them to redden, and, in many cases, will cause bleeding.

What does virgin coconut oil do to your skin?

Kenya

Answer
Virgin coconut oil feeds skin many health promoting and rejuvenating nutrients. It's best to liberally apply oil and massage thoroughly into skin while applying some pressure. It is a perfect safe moisturizer, Do not remove. Only wipe away surface excess with water and tissues - will not leave face oily looking.

It can quickly heal skin that has been damaged by use of products - many have skin harming and skin sickening ingredients. In one day it will normalize enlarged pores and if consistently and properly used give you a totally blemish free, healthy and radiant skin. Massage will quickly tighten and firm skin and it will look and feel rejuvenated.

Thank you Mukunda! I've been massaging my whole face with the oil for about one week now. My neck, face and my skin are much tighter and my skin feels so soft and moist ALL DAY! And my upper lip wrinkles(smoker's lips) are 70% gone. Forehead lines. What forehead lines?? They're 50% gone!

Why is coconut oil good for hair and skin?

Chocolate

What does it do?

Answer
Coconut oil is very nourishing to the skin and hair. First of all, it absorbs easily (as long as you don't put too much on--a little goes a long way!), so you don't get stuck feeling greasy. It also helps restore the skin's natural protective barrier. Coconut oil is antifungal and antibacterial so it's also great for treating skin conditions like fungal infections and acne. It even provides a little sun protection (most sources say around SPF 4).

Which soda is the strongest caffeine?

I want which soda has more caffeine because , I am starting to get tired of energy drink because the price are going up.

So, which soda has more caffeine?
I am asking thanks.

I am not going to drink it everyday.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Answer
Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant, not a provider of energy.
It 'whips' your adrenal gland, & stresses your body, as well as i a toxic substance which builds up in the body & eventually can cause all manor of psychological disturbance:

IF energy is what you are looking for, start cooking with Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.
It is NON-fattening, because the body never stores it, but instead burns it as though it was a carbohydrate! And, it is digested quickly in the small intestine. It is THE best oil for cooking with, because it gets VERY hot BEFORE it will finally burn. (I prefer using a lot of spices with it.) It has also been shown to have many GREAT health benefits (like: stabilizing blood sugar, & providing ready energy, etc.) :

Another BAD THING about soda is the ACID in it . . .
It REMOVES MINERALS from TEETH and BONES, even when it has NO sugar! :

So, I suggest drinking either plain water, or if you must have flavor, try Stevia sweetened drops, which are much more economical PLUS healthy! You can make your drink strong & sweet, or as weak as you want it to be. (They are sold in Health Food Stores & online---as is Coconut oil. The drops come in a variety of flavors, too.)

Loss of the sense of smell often precedes the major symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.?

asdfg

What additional information is needed to use this association to prevent or treat these diseases?

Answer
This is an excellent question because it is opens the door to a serious medical issue which is the ignoring of seemingly simple symptoms which could be the door to life changing medical conditions.

The first thing that is needed is a good differential diagnosis so that treatment for the correct condition can be initiated.

Although there are similarities between Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, the primary treatments are not the same because many of the symptoms are not the same. Supplemental treatments can be quite similar depending upon the medications used in the primary treatment.

Although both conditions have both motor and non-motor symptoms, PD has more initial motor symptoms while AD manifests more cognitive symptoms.

It is also important to distinguish between both conditions and normal aging and even more important not to rationalize the symptoms as aging when there are other markers of disease. Anosmia also presents in Lewy Body Dementia, PDD, and Alzheimer's with Leewy Body Dementia as well as several other conditions such as: diabetes, Huntington's disease, malnutrition, brain tumor, MS, medications, certain chemical exposures, Schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, zinc deficiency.

If anosmia presents as a solitary symptom, it would also be helpful to treat it as such and take a look at zinc levels for example. However, if anosmia presents as being 10% less than normal aging (a 10% increase actually) then it is time to look at AD as a possible cause of the condition. It is also important to note the progression of the anosmia.

The benefit of early treatment in both AD and PD has the goal of slowing the progression of the diseases although that is not always possible.

In PD it would be a combination therapy involving a medication such as Azilect, with nutritional supplements such as CoQ10 and other antioxidants to relieve oxidative stress, vitamin B complex, vitamin D3 (higher dosages are now suggested to maintain the immune system) and several others.

In AD therapies are being developed to clear the plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Currently doctors use chlorinesterase inhibitors such as Aricept (donezepil hcl) and Excelon (rivastigimine - available as a patch for continuous delivery). Nutritional supplements can be added such as medium chain triglycerides (MCT) combined with coconut oil and Omega 3 oils.

Although smoking appears to defer PD, it is said to increase your chances of developing AD by 79%. And obesity can increase the chances by 3.5X. Chronic stress is an early indicator in both PD and AD. Essentially, there are other conditions which should be controlled well if they are present: diabetes, hypertension, higcholesterolol, heart disease, obesity, sleep disorders (which are actually symptomatic) inactive lifestyle.

A change of diet is felt to be in order. The Mediterranean diet is now recommended. Several small meals throughout the day, green and black teas have been found to be beneficial in PD and would apply to AD as well.

Exercise should be both physical and mental for both AD and PD. Forced Exercise for PD has been shown to help restore some brain homeostasis, reduce reliance on meds and to relieve symptoms in Parkinson's disease. Yoga helps relaxation and breathing.

I don't want to get into the NSAID debate here because of the risk of kidney and liver damage without regular testing but there is evidence that ibuprofen can delay onset of AD. I am adding 2 links below for AD and one for PD. There is no question that reducing the risk levels are highly significant.

But the most important thing is education of the medical staff through continuing education of the early warning signs and the importance of being aware of, open to, to follow-up on these early warning symptoms. The next most important thing is for patients and their families (especially the caregivers) to be proactive. Do not accept, "well, it isn't this, so go home." Always ask, "What's the next step?" If that isn't forthcoming, ask until there is an affirmative action. Just because a suggested treatment is not a prescription, it does not mean that there should not be a follow-up appointment ina few months with re-determinationon made at that time.

One last note: if a diagnosis is made of PD or AD, it is a good time to get your house in order. Better not to need the financial, medical and legal plans than to need them and not be capable of making them.

Any recipe ideas with coconut water?

Do any of you put coconut oil on your dog's food?

Julie D.

I was talking to a friend of mine a few months ago, and they suggested putting coconut oil on my Dobermans food. Do any of you add this to your dog's food? I finally went out and bought some of this yesterday as I've been told it's wonderful to cook with and can even be used on your own skin and hair. Do you use this stuff, and if you do with your dog, how much and how often do you use it? What size dog do you have? Any other tips would be great if you would like to share them. Thank you.

No TD will be given by me.
This is the exact product that I bought, but I sure as HECK didn't pay the prices quoted in this link.

@ Mary.......Thanks for telling me about this. I'm going to call my oldest Son a little later and ask him about this. He is a health FREAK, and I thought he used this stuff, but I could be wrong. I was sort of hoping that *Greek* would see this and chime in, as he is a very health conscience person.
OK.......I just off the phone with my Son and he says I bought the wrong kind, but it's OK to use. He said the KEY words when buying Coconut Oil are: Organic, Expeller Press, Unrefined, and Extra Virgin. Clearly, by the link I provided, I did buy Organic Expeller pressed, but the one I bought was refined and not Extra Virgin.

I'm still hoping that Greek will chime in with his opinion, if not used with dogs, but his opinion for people.

Mary, my Son said the GOOD cholesterol should go up. Maybe you aren't looking at that part of the whole picture.

Answer
I have a Doberman, and I do use coconut oil for both myself & for my dogs.

I have used it on my skin, though hesitant at first, I have used it. Not trying to sound superficial but...my skin is very soft and clean. I only use plain old organic coconut oil for my skin.

As for my hair, you do a pre-wash treatment, which works better than a post wash...if this is making any sense at all... To add, part of the reason is because coconut oil repels water.... So when applied as a pre-wash conditioner, it prevents the entrance of water into each strand, which would otherwise make it prone to damage and breakage.

As for the dogs? Some like the taste in their food and some won't touch it....as I have firstly experienced with one of my previous dogs. One LOVED the taste, and the other turned her nose to it.

Use only organic virgin coconut oil. "Start slowly with a half teaspoon a day for each 20 pounds of body weight. It's best to divide it and give a little though out the day. Work up to a full teaspoon once or twice a day." This is the site that I looked into for my dogs..and my elderly dogs are happy & healthy ------http://naturalhealthychoices.weebly.com/coconut-oil-for-dogs.html

If you want me to add anything, tell me.

Coconut oil for dogs?

Chelsea La

I used to give my GSD fish oil pills but for the past few months have not been giving them to her. I have noticed her coat is not as shiny - not a huge change or anything but something I've noticed nonetheless. Anyway, I've been looking into Coconut Oil for dogs. I think it's something we'd like to try however, I'm worried about her having very loose stools from adding this.

My question is regarding the Coconut oil. Has anyone that uses it for their dog experienced problems with loose stools or upset tummies? When I buy it I know it's just going to be a learning experience to see what happens but I didn't know if some sort of reaction to it was usual or not. Is it a good idea to build up to a tablespoon of it a day?

Thanks :)

Answer
I use it a couple of times per week with both of my dogs. One is a Doberman (70 lbs.) and the other a small Poodle mix/mutt that weighs abouut 15 lbs. I don't actually use any exact measurement, so I just eyeball it. Neither of my dogs have had any loose stools at all from this.

Since this stuff can be a pit pricey, let me give you a little tip. I don't have a Costo membership but my cousin does, so she gets me this......Carrington Farms.....pure, unrefined, cold pressed and 100% organic extra virgin coconut oil. The one I have is a 54 oz tub, which is pretty darn big, and I think it only costed about $15.00 or something close to that.

Can coconut oil be used instead of vegetable oil in a betty crocker chocolate cake mix recipe?

honeybee

I thought it might make it taste better. If I'm going to do a boxed recipe instead of homemade I'd rather have at least one secret ingredient ;)

Answer
You could but you would want to use less. Coconut oil can be overpowering, extremely rich, and high in calories. It might change the texture and the way the cake bakes. You might have to cook it for more or less time.

Do a little research on working with coconut oil and see what is said about it. Go to food sites and blogs or type "cooking with coconut oil" or "coconut oil with cake mix".

Coconut Oil|QUESTION?

Sleep

I have bought a product from NOWsolutions, a 207 mL thing of Coconut Oil.
It is directed for hair & skin, but it says it is considered "food-grade."
Can I eat it? It doesn't say in suggested uses that I should, BUT IT SAYS CONSIDERED FOOD GRADE!!!!!!!

Answer
Great stuff for your skin - hair I don't know. As to eating it, it's OK to use for food. In some cultures food is sauteed in coconut oil but the flavor is fairly distinctive so you may not want that flavor. One thing it is really good for is about 1 tablespoon to a couple of ounces of melted chocolate instead of shortening to make it shine better when using it to coat something. Prevents that sort of dusty look after you have melted chocolate and it rehardens.

what are the best healthful organic recipes?

albert

i'm trying to change my life.

Answer
Making smart choices when it comes to cooking will change your life. Instead of using canola or vegetable oil, use olive oil, sunflower oil, or coconut oil. Coconut oil has so many health benefits it's incredible! Canola and vegetable oil is almost always genetically engineered and not very safe when consumed in large amounts. Avoid using non-stick pans. Using non-stick will create polymers in the food you are cooking, which results in plastics in your body. Invest in stainless steel pots, pans, and spatula. Avoid using plastic while cooking, so buy some wooden spoons and tongs. Always use filtered water. Almost all tap water contains chemical additives that have been linked to cancer. Although the EPA/FDA regulates for a small portion to be considered safe, there is no way to determine if you are exceeding that amount. Sea salt has an amazing amount of minerals your body needs, having regular table salt has no health benefits what-so-ever and can contain aluminum particulates.

Breakfast recipes: Poached eggs, raw spinach, tomato slices, avocado, sauteed red potatoes with garlic, pepper, and sea salt. Omelette with spinach, green onions, mushrooms, red bell pepper, and garlic.

Lunch: Salad, spinach, romaine (red & green), celery, cucumber, carrots, tomato, chicken. Sandwich, wheat bread, muenster cheese, mustard, tomato, spinach, sea salt & pepper.

Dinner: Steam fry with quinoa, beef strips, broccoli, green onion, bean sprouts, red & green bell pepper, yellow squash. Spices: turmeric, cumin, red pepper, paprika

Snacks: raw fruit, kale chips, baby carrots, nuts.

Always read ingredients. For example, bread at the store almost always contains high fructose corn syrup and a vinyl foaming agent called Azodicarbonamide, or ADA. This is not healthy to consume. When buying animal protein, such as beef, chicken, and eggs, try to buy locally raised. Chicken at the grocery store usually goes through about 10 chlorine baths before it's sold. Beef bought at the store can contain "meat glue". The reason meat glue is used in beef so it's easier for the beef manufacturer to label all the beef the same, as far as fat content. They add all the beef products, add an enzyme, and all the beef binds together so you can cut it off in slice. Avoid all lunch meat. Eating beef rare has many health benefits as long as there are no additives in the beef. Butter is good, your body needs fat, so don't stray away from butter. Avoid pasteurized milk, and like I said, ALWAYS READ INGREDIENTS. Another example, some foods have abbreviations, like TBHQ, which is very toxic to the body when consumed in large amounts. As mentioned before, these chemicals are approved by the FDA in small amounts. But if you're consuming more than one product with this chemical, you are exceeding the limit which is considered safe.

Any good vegatarian/vegan recipes?

1 cup non-GM cornmeal
½ tsp cinnamon (optional)
½ tsp sea salt
1½ cups fruit juice (apple, pear, or other non-citrus fruit)
1½ cups filtered water
1 tsp non hydrogenated coconut oil, or sunflower or olive oil (plus extra to oil dish)
1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen, but not thawed)

Mix the cornmeal, cinnamon, salt, and juice in a small bowl.

Bring the water to a boil in a 3-qt/L saucepan. Once boiling, slowly stir in cornmeal mixture.

Cook uncovered on medium-low heat for 20-30 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent scorching, until thick and smooth. It's done when you can jam a spoon into it and it'll stand on its own.

Remove from heat. Stir in the oil using a silicone spatula, then gently fold in the blueberries. Scrape polenta into a lightly oiled or parchment-lined baking dish or pie plate, and smooth out evenly. Allow to set for about 30 minutes (It'll firm up on its own; you'll see).

Cut the polenta however you like—I slice it evenly into quarters and then cut each quarter into 4 triangles.

Store any remaining polenta in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4-5 days and warm it up in a skillet or toaster oven before serving.

Immune Boost Juice

Makes 1 serving (about 1¾ cups)

3 large or 4 medium carrots
1 small or ½ medium beet
1 medium apple
1 thumb-sized piece fresh ginger root

Optionals (choose 2)
½ lemon, peeled
1 small or medium cucumber
2 stalks celery
4 stalks kale

Scrub all produce well, and trim off ends of carrots and beet—no need to peel anything. Your juicer may have a wide enough mouth for whole apples, but I recommend quartering them and removing the seeds (as they contain small amounts of cyanide). Process all ingredients in juicer according to machine's directions.

Drink immediately (centrifugal juicers produce juice that oxidizes quickly), sipping slowly for maximum nutrient absorption.

And for the evening, you could make millet-stuffed bell peppers..

Millet-Stuffed Bell Peppers

Makes 6-8 servings

1 tbsp olive oil
2 medium onions, finely chopped
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp tamari soy sauce
2 tsp dried thyme (or 1 tbsp fresh)
1 tsp dried rosemary (or 2 tsp fresh)
½ tsp celery seed
freshly ground black pepper to taste
4 cups cooked millet (may substitute with quinoa or brow rice)
¾ cup tahini
¾ cup ground raw pumpkin or sunflower seeds
up to ¼ cup filtered water or vegetable stock
½ cup minced fresh parsley leaves
6-8 organic medium-large bell peppers

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

Heat the oil in a 3-qt/L saucepan on medium-high. Add the onions and sauté for 8 minutes, until they begin to soften. Add the garlic, tamari, thyme, rosemary, celery seed, and pepper, and sauté for another 5 minutes.

Combine the millet, tahini, and seeds in a large bowl and mix well. Transfer to saucepan and cook until well heated, stirring occasionally; you'll likely want to add a few splashes of water or stock to prevent sticking.

Turn off heat and stir in the parsley. Adjust seasonings to taste (sometimes I add some extra thyme and rosemary).

Slice tops off the bell peppers, remove the core, seeds, and veins, and stuff peppers with millet mixture. Discard or compost bell pepper tops (or enjoy as a raw snack).

Place 1-in (2½-cm) water in a baking pan. Place peppers upright (they must stay upright to keep stuffing from getting soggy) in pan and bake for 25-30 minutes, until peppers are soft.

And for a visual:

Happy cooking. :)

Does omega-3 fish oil 1000mg cause prostate cancer or not?

Sergio

I just bought some and I don't know if I want to take them.

Answer
No, not even close. It has many uses but the two most important reasons to take it is for inflammation and for the arteries. Inflammation is the first step in almost any disease. If that is taken care of it doesn't progress. Arteries stretch and contract and fish oil helps them do it. Fish, krill, coconut, flax, and primrose oils are omega 3. Corn, vegetable, canola, etc., are omega 6. They are the unhealthy ones.

Is drinking a tsp. of olive oil daily ok?

Q. I have really dry skin, so I've been taking a fish oil capsule (1000mg) each day. It helps a little. My cat has dry skin and problems with furballs. I read that a tsp. of olive oil helps w/cats' digestion, so I've been giving it to my cat each day. It seems to help (she loves it, too!). Her coat looks really good. So, I was wondering if it would help me, too. I've been drinking a tsp. along with my cat. I know it has "good" fat, and I don't care about the fat and cals anyway since I'm trying to gain a few lbs. Are there bad effects from it long-term? I also know fish oil is good for PMS, naturally regulating hormones. This is good since my periods tend to skip around and I miss them easily. Will olive oil help this, too. It won't make my hair oily, will it? I have fine hair, but it's dry so I wouldn't think it would get oily. Is it ok to take more than a tsp.? I wouldn't think a tsp. would do much. I just want something to help with my itchy dry skin. External things don't work.

Answer
For one thing if your cat gets a one tsp dose then your reccomended dose would be much higher then that, I read that one tablespoon after every meal is a good dose for a dieting adult. Second, if you are going to take olive oil why not combine it with somthing yummy like bread and vinegar or tomato's or pasta instead of drinking it straight--yuck! Third if you are going to drink it straight, you should splurge and get the really good stuff that is not fake and shitty like the american olive oil is... it is better for the health and tastes better (raw).

The Possible benifits of Olive oil are as follows: Olive oil aids in digestion, therefore helps to sustain metabolism. The healthy caloric intake is not low a low calorie food. Olive oil is rich in vitamins A, B-1, B-2, C, D, and Iron. Most importantly, olive oil helps the body to maintain strong levels of vitamin E, which is a great helper in delaying the aging process. Olive oil gives the body “beneficial” fatty acids to use, which helps the skin become suppler. Olive oil helps your digestive tract by aiding constipation. One of the greatest appreciated benefits of olive oil is there is no cholesterol in it. Olive oil also helps the stomach fight ulcers.

I hear that coconut oil, fish oil (salmon), and flax seed oil are also a miracle oils Maybe it would be good to vary the healthy fats, as variety is the spice of life!

Im trying to grow my relaxed hair(end of neck length)?

d(0u0)b

Ok hi, my aunt told me my hair texture was a 4c i think, im African-American, and i wanted to grow my relaxed hair even more.My hair is stiff, thick and im 14 years old. I have Tee-tree oil, lavender oil(pure), castor oil, olive oil shampoo, wrap spray, conditioner, and mayonnaise. I have BB hair grease (coconut), i have all kinds of wrap lotions &&. foams..i have organics shampoo(coconut, passion fruit, grapefruit and other scents) I have some leave in treatments, jojoba oil-included products(but not the actuall oil), protein stuff too...

And another thing, i want to go natural so my hair can grow more but i cant seem to find any hair styles to fit me!! I don't like dreads, afros, nore shribbled-up curls!!My mom wont let me get my hair braided like kinky.braids...and if you guys say heat and flat irons are bad for my relaxed hair, what SHOULD i use??PLEASE give me some advise im desperate :(

Now, I told you everything i have because so i want to know can i mix anything? I have vitamin pills too.I cant get used to exercising, eating fruits and veggies how can i do this??Every week i wash my hair. I hate flat ironing my hair because the flat irons my mom has are the ones with the stove&&. curls set; i don't know how to use them that well, every time she flat irons my hair, it looks shiny and frizzy. My hair's TRUE weakness is frizz.I REALY love my hair and wish to take good care of it.can you PLEASE give me some advice??It's really dry too, and bad breakage in the back, my hair dresser says that i cant even get my hair streeked, dyed, or colored because my hair is in bad condition; i got to the shop every 1 1/2 month, my grandmother tries her best, but she doesnt have enough money to take me every weekend, so...and there's this hair wax my stylist uses.she has her products turned around so her customers wont know her specialtys.. its in a white jar, brown writing and same-color brown top she dabbs some in her hands, rubs it together, puts it on the section of the hair she's gonna flat iron, and flat irons it. when she's done, its bumpy, full of body, and movable like a white person's hair(not trying to be racist, or funny)

THANK YOU!!!

Answer
Okay, as for all of the products, you really don't need a whole laundry list of products that you should be using, unless of course you're doing the trial and error thing (trying differents products out to see what works best for you). You're on a good path with the pure lavender oil, castor, and tea tree oil, just try to get some essential jojoba oil to act as a carrier oil. Mix about 1 ounce of the jojoba oil with 3-5 drops of the lavender, castor and tea tree oils. If you are trying to go natural you can get rid of the wrapping lotion or spray because you will no longer have any use for that (if your gonna do a big chop). You should also throw away the BB hair grease which is really heavy and will clog your pores with the heavy petrolatum (which is probably the main ingredient). With clogged pores your scalp can not breath and that may cause your hair to grow at a slower rate. Also you should realize that going natural does not mean that your hair will grow faster or longer than it is already growing. As a matter of fact it may seem as if it isn't growing much because of the shrinkage with your curls. You just won't see nearly as much breakage or shedding, therefore you'll retain most of your hair growth. Most people go natural for their own personal benefit, to improve the health of their hair or to save time and money spent at the salon. As far as styles you could wear cornrows, micro braids, two strand twists, or flat twists (later take those out and wear a twist out). While you are growing your hair out you dont have to wear natural styles. You could still blow dry your hair with a comb attachment, then flat iron with a different flat iron. You could find a a decent flat iron at walmart for $20. Once you get alot of new growth it will be much harder for you to wear it straight though. Since your hair is really dry and damaged you may want to* think about doing a big chop if your mom will let you OR when you get trims just have them trim it a little more than they normally would to speed up the process. I think it's easier to do the BC beecause you won't have to deal with to types of hair and making the curly hair straight or getting the straight hair to look right in a natural style. Also you really can see progress when you BC, from a small fro, to ear length, to shoulder length, etc. The best thing about going natural is you get to test your hair, play with it a little and see what works for it. Most natural styles you can do yourself at home, like two strand twists, therefore decreasing the amount of money you have to spend at the salon. And I also think that your hair stylist is being really trifling and shady for not wanting to tell you how to take care of your hair and which products to use. She should be aiming to get your hair to it's healthiest state period, not just when she is the one doing it. You should ask her how to take care of it at home, where you can buy the products, or if you can buy some from her. If she still doesn't want to tell you then look at them when she walks away or is taking care of another client.

How do i make my hair grow faster?

Erin

i cut my hair short to prove to myself that i could be beautiful without my long hair, but i was wrong. so how can i make my hair grow faster? please help.

Answer
Growing long hair will take patience and time, as hair only grows an average of 1/2 inch per month. There are something you can do to help aid healthier hair that could potentially grow slightly more than 1/2 inch.

1. Eat a well-rounded diet. This sounds cliche and over-used, but this cannot be stressed enough. Foods that are good for your hair include: salmon, tuna, eggs, green leafy veggies such as kale & spinach, sardines, carrots, tomatoes, turkey, chickpeas, bananas and avocados

2. Take a multivitamin. Taking a multivitamin does not make up for a crappy diet, so try to eat as healthy as possible. Dark, leafy green vegetables and protein are essential for the health of your hair and skin. Dark leafy green vegetables will help mostly with strength and shine while oily fish(salmon, tuna and sardines) will help with shine, softness and strength. More strength means less breakage which means it will be longer.

3. Massage your scalp for 3-5 minutes every morning and night. You can do the massaging when you're in the shower washing your hair or conditioning it, but massaging helps stimulate blood flow to the scalp.

4. Deep condition on a weekly basis to keep your hair nourished and moisturized. If your hair is dry, damaged, curly or kinky, try a deep conditioner with extra virgin coconut oil. If it's thin or normal(meaning not damaged), use olive oil. It's probably in your kitchen already. Warm it up and apply to damp hair. You can either leave it on overnight(in which case, put your hair in a bun) or leave it in for 30 minutes-60 minutes & then rinse and wash your hair as usual.

Try to avoid using heat tools on your hair. If you must, then use a thermal heat protectant to protect your hair. I would advice you to avoid heat at all costs though.

5. As for supplements, the BIG suggestion everyone makes. If you rather not take a multivitamin, you can opt for a hair, skin and nails supplement. These can be found anywhere from Target to Wal-Mart to GNC & Vitaminshoppe. I'd go for the ones from Wal-Mart because they're cheap and they all contain the same ingredients. That said, I would recommend you go for a multivitamin.

In addition to a multivitamin, assuming you're 16+ years old, I recommend biotin. It can be found at Wal-Mart for less than $3. Biotin will simply help strengthen the hair and can have benefits for your nails as well. Many people report seeing an increase in growth when taking biotin but it can take time. Generally it's said it takes about 3 months to see a difference. I would highly recommend you take a biotin supplement on a daily basis.

6. Drink water! Typical answer, but water is 1/8 of what your hair is made up of. It'll keep your hair and scalp moisturized.

I hope you realize that nothing will exactly make your hair grow faster, but these things can help with the health of your hair so you'll notice more growth.

Cooking with coconut oil?

Peggy Pira

My small town doesn't have coconut oil. Recipe calls for raw cocanut oil melted. I don't even know what coconut oil is. Can I use vegable oil or canola oil? Or just butter melted.

Answer
Yes. You may substitute canola oil, olive oil, etc. Raw (extra virgin) coconut oil is usually solid when purchased, but melts in warmer houses but this does not hurt it at all. A good coconut oil will smell & taste like fresh coconut. In the solid state it is pure white. It should not be refrigerated, and has a great shelf life - upwards to 2 years. It is cholesterol free.

According to the website www.nutiva.com, you can use coconut oil instead of other oils in your daily cooking. You can blend coconut oil in smoothies, use it as a spread on toast (it makes fantastic cinnamon toast), use it as a topping on popcorn, and in other recipes.

Therefore, yes, it can be substituted for other oils in your recipe.

Has Anyone Tried Eating Coconut Oil & Got Sick?

pamm8577

I was giving Organic Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil To take for my yeast infection & overall help me feel better. She told me to eat 3 Tablespoons a day. The lady at health food store. Now it looked good, but it was made for cooking with. So I didn't really know what to do. So I took 1 heaping tablespoon & it got really sick, It taste just like Crisco Oil, & I spit it out. So I later mixed it with a hot liquid & lemon & I got it down. But that greasy taste was nasty. Within a hour, I was so Nauseated I started Throwing Up. I Swore I would never take it again. However The next morning I got up I felt really good. I don't know if this has anything to do with the Coconut Oil Or not. But I want someone to please tell me what I am doing wrong. And if there is another way to take it without getting sick. Can you take it in capsules? Or am I taking the wrong kind of Coconut Oil. It does not taste or smell like coconut. It is made by the company "Tree of Life" Please anyone out there help!
I am also taking it to lose weight..

Answer
You should try extra virgin as it tends to taste more like coconut than oil. I can't believe she told you to take it by the spoonful. It is much easier to eat it on something like popcorn or a baked potato then to try and eat it "as is". I bought one variety and it was horrible...smelled like some kind of petroleum oil. It wasn't extra virgin, but just cold pressed. I then tried the extra virgin which smells and taste like coconut oil and you actually could have eaten it off the spoon. I'm sorry I don't remember the brand and I'm out. I just know the label is green and yellow.

How do I stop coconut oil from clamping up?

jinu jose

We all know that coconut oil just goes hard and clamps up in cold temperatures. is there any way to stop this....like adding something to it or something???

PS: i just mixed up some coconut oil with baking soda to make a homemade toothpaste, and it just thickens when kept outside for sometime.

Answer
Even regular oil, like vegetable or olive oil, will clump us when left refrigerated or left outdoors in the cold. Since the texture of coconut oil is more similar to shortening, your coconut oil is even more prone to clumping or becoming solid. Sorry, there is nothing you can do to avoid the clumping if you keep it cold temperatures. In order to soften the mixture, put it near your campfire for 10 or 15 minutes.

is brushing my teeth twice a day with just coconut oil and then flossing every night okay?

Ruby

or is that not good oral hygiene..

i hate toothpaste

fluoride is poisonous

and id rather not add baking soda to my coconut oil for toothpaste. but if someone has a good enough reason to then i will

but i think to keep my routine as simple as possible!!

thanks

Can I use coconut oil in making my own rosemary oil for my hair?

Can I use it instead of almond oil, jojoba oil, wtvr.
Thanks :D

Answer
yes. Coconut oil is really great for your hair because it makes it healthy and super shiny.

Hair Care: Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing them a shinny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care

is coconut oil good for your hair?

angie

i have pretty damaged hair from dyeing it so much and wanted to try some home remedies. Ppparently coconut oil is good?

Answer
Coconut oil is pretty good for damaged hair, it makes it more soft and silky.

For a great hair treatment/conditioner try 1 egg yoke, 1-2 Tbsp Olive Oil, and 2-3 drops Vitamin E. Combine these, wet hair, mix combination into hair. Let set for 3-5 minutes, feels/looks/smell strange but it works so well. Wash out with shampoo.

Comb olive oil through the dry parts of your hair, and towel dry. Put a towel on your pillow, and leave the oil on overnight. Shampoo it out in the morning. This worked well when I had no money for good conditioner. Olive oil is actually great for everything--skin, hair, nails--be careful with extra virgin, though, because it smells weird.

Wash your hair with chamomile, rosemary, sage, or yucca tea to restore shine and vigor.

For soft hair use olive oil, it in crease shine too. All you have to do is 5 min before you shower pour a small amount olive oil in your hand and work threw hair, roots to tips. When you shower all you have to do is shampoo, and the oil is gone and your hair is left soft and shiny. (Sunflower or vegetable oil works also).

Tips:

-Dont wash your hair every day, wash it every other day! When you wash it every day you are washing out all of the good oils that make your hair soft.

-Use a deep conditioner, and if you blow dry your hair or straighten, make sure you are using a heat protectant.

-Comb your hair everyday.

-If you want some gel to put on your hair (if it is frizzy), you can try the hair serrum from Boots.

-Don't use hot water, only cold water for washing hair.

-Don't change shampoos often. Stick to one, stay away from garnier shampoos as they have so much chemicals, which can cause more damage to your hair.

I hope this works out for you! Have beautiful hair! :)

How will the coconut oil help for men?

12:01AM

Hi I am a male 23, having constantly cystic acne on my jaw, i suspect they are related to hormone imbalance, so my friend suggested me to take coconut oil to balance my hormone and also kill bad stuff in my body too. I am just wondering will that really work and how does the coconut oil help for male?

Cheers,
Jack

Answer
The Benefits of Coconut Oil for Men
Tom Servo, Yahoo Contributor Network

If you're an average guy, you probably have a bottle of vegetable oil or olive oil that you keep in your pantry for general cooking purposes, but have you ever considered using coconut oil instead? Did you even know you could? Don't be surprised if you haven't. For some reasons, coconut oil just doesn't seem to be as popular in the U.S. as other oils. You should really give it a shot, though. It can do amazing things for you.

Refined vs. Unrefined

Before you buy your first bottle of coconut oil, you need to know some of the important differences between refined and unrefined coconut oil. Most coconut oils you will find at any store are refined. If the oil is unrefined, it will say that it is or it will be called "virgin" or "extra virgin" coconut oil. Generally speaking, you want unrefined coconut oil because it is healthier. However, that's not to say you can't find a non-hydrogenised refined coconut oil; my advice is to keep a bottle of each in your kitchen for different uses.

Cooking

Coconut oil is an excellent cooking oil. Refined coconut oil is flavorless and odorless, which makes it an excellent choice for baking and sautéing. It won't overwhelm the taste of your dish and it won't make your food greasy like vegetable oil will. Virgin coconut oil is also great for cooking but it does have a very strong coconut smell and flavor. Be careful, though; coconut oil has a slightly lower smoke point than other cooking oils, such as olive, peanut and vegetable oil. Keep your temperature under 350 degrees F. to avoid smoking.

Weight Loss

If you're trying to get rid of your gut, coconut oil might be just the trick. In a study called, "Medium-Chain Triglycerides Increase Energy Expenditure and Decrease Adiposity in Overweight Men," researchers found that the medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) found in coconut oil seem to play a significant role in fat loss for obese men. This is because your liver directly absorbs MCFA's and quickly converts them into energy rather than depositing them into your fat cells. Both refined and unrefined coconut oils contain MCFA's; just remember to stay away from hydrogenised and partially hydrogenised coconut oils to avoid the trans fats.

Personal Care

In addition to being a great food product, coconut oil can also be used on your skin and your hair. It is an excellent moisturizer and can be used as skin moisturizer or conditioner. I recommend applying a small amount to your face as a soothing aftershave, and to your hair after you wash it as a leave-in conditioner. You can also apply it to sunburn or anywhere you have dry skin.

I only listed a few of the uses and health benefits of coconut oil. Believe it or not, there are a lot more. If you start using coconut oil for cooking or improving your personal appearance and find that you like it, you should do some more research on it. You may find a slew of other uses for it that are right for you that you would have never even considered.

coconut oil benefits?

hey guys if you have used coconut oil can you tell me something about the below things? thanks so much??

~Hair &skin
~tanning
~weight loss
~firming skin

thank you SO much!!! also, can you tell me how to take the oil (not the capsules) if you cook with it (instead of using oil/butter), does it effect the taste of what you are cooking with?

thank you guys!!!!

Answer
Coconut oil doesn't add much of a taste to food, but adds a dreamy, sweet smell. It's great for tropical dishes! However, it is mostly saturated fat, so should be used in moderation. Certainly it is not a weight loss supplement. In one serving there are 14g of fat, 12.5 of which are saturated! Olive oil or vegetable oil would be a healthier alternative.

As for hair and skin, it's great for both. I use it as a facial and body moisturizer once a week and it works wonders even on sensitive, dry skin like mine. As for firming skin, I have not seen any research, but most research on cosmetic issues like that are completely unreliable anyway. Having fat in your diet is good for your hair, but applying it straight to your hair will leave it greasy.

Tanning....well, I don't tan ( counterproductive to the skin health issues) so I can't say.
Hope that helped a little :)

Unrefined or refined coconut oil?

Glamor Chi

Hi guys, I recently pursed Spectrum's refined coconut oil from Walmart to improve the health of my half natural half relaxed hair (I'm transitioning). I didn't see any unrefined coconut oil while I was there. Should I have gotten unrefined instead of refined? I know the "scientific" differences between the two but what are the actually benefits of either one.

Answer
UNREFINED! I know Whole Foods has it in the cooking oil area. Its about $8-$10 & is worth it if you're going to put the effort into your hair. The refined kind has been processed and you lose some of the benefits that you were getting the oil for in the first place. Also make sure you get the organic kind. I know spectrum has one for hair but if you get the general unrefined organic oil you can use it for other things too. Like your skin and you eat it if you're trying to lose weight. The unrefined gives you a multitude of benefits.

Breathing hard and Coconut oil?

arampetr

Hi I want to know if coconut oil helps against high blood pressure and breathing hard problems. My breathing is a bit hard and I read some articles which say that coconut oil helps to increase metabolism and relaxes breathing. Is this true? Is coconut oil good for people? will it aid me in breathing less deep and more relaxed?
No I want to use it in a liquid form as oil. No pills. And I was wondering if it will help me in better breathing. Anyone using it please let me know what experience you had with it so far. If you have not used coconut oil please do not write anything here, because I want help from people who have some experience please.

Answer
I wouldn't doubt it.
Burt's Bess (one of my favorite product lines) has a foot cream made from coconut oil that works so nice, and it has sort of a 'vick's vapo rub' effect too... i love it.
Anyway, are you talking about using it in the pill form or what? how are you planning to use it so that it provides all the benefits that you're taking about?

Raw coconut oil to build up my horses topline?

politicall

I've posted a question about putting weight on my mare which shes lost due to the extreme heat in my area (says my vet). I'm feeding her beet pulp and safe choice. She's coming along pretty nicely, filling in around her ribs and hip bones. She almost looks healthy except for her topline. I'm doing slow hill work and trotting over poles with her, of course, but I've been reading up on other ways that might help. I read that feeding raw coconut oil will go straight to a horses topline. Anyone heard of this or used it? True or wives tale? Thanks!

Answer
Going off what I've found on google it's not ideal. It is a fast energy fat that is burned quickly. Therefor I don't see any benefits in adding this to feeds as it will lend itself to "hyper" energy and will not aid in weight gain. (See attached link).

You can feed a high fat content diet to add weight but only exercise will truly build the top line. Keep going with your trotting and hill work. You may also want to add some electrolytes to your horses diet to replace what the sweat is taking out.

I ALWAYS feed my guys rice bran, this way you add weight and not fizz. For my hard keeper mare I also add "Equisoy". It's a supplement which will also add additional weight but not hot behaviour.
This has really helped build my mare up as she had a poor top line also.

Coconut oil is one of the most stable oils you can buy. It does not turn rancid easily. It does not attack your arteries. In fact, coconut oil was one of the foods Weston Price studied in his journeys. He discovered that the coconut was considered, by the local populations, a medicine food. He found that those civilizations that consumed coconut regularly had no knowledge of cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Let’s take a look at the healing properties of coconut oil:

Coconut oil is antiviral, antifungal (kills yeast too) and antibacterial. It attacks and kills viruses that have a lipid (fatty) coating, such as herpes, HIV, hepatitis C, the flu, and mononucleosis. It kills the bacteria that cause pneumonia, sore throats, dental cavities, urinary tract infections, meningitis, gonorrhea, food poisoning, pneumonia, and many, many more bacterial infections. It kills the fungus/yeast infections that cause candida, ringworm, athletes foot, thrush, jock itch, diaper rash and more.
Coconut oil is called the "low fat" fat. It actually acts like a carbohydrate in that it is quickly broken down in the liver and used as quick energy. It is NOT stored like other fats. It boosts one’s energy and endurance. Many athletes use it blended into their drinks. It also supports thyroid function and increases your metabolism (great if you want to lose weight).
Coconut oil improves digestion and absorption of fat soluble vitamins, minerals (especially calcium and magnesium), and amino acids. It improves the body’s use of blood glucose and improves insulin secretion and absorption (great for type II diabetes). In fact, many diabetics (type I and type II) use it to reduce their symptoms. One’s risk of diabetes decreases with regular use of coconuts and coconut oil. And as we already mentioned, cooking with coconut oil does not create any harmful byproducts.
Coconut oil helps the body heal and repair faster. It aids and supports immune function, protecting us from a variety of cancers.
Coconut oil, contrary to much hubbub, is good for your heart. It keeps our blood platelets from sticking together (and causing dangerous clots). Regular users of coconut oils have a much lower chance of atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries), arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and strokes. Coconut oil can lower your blood pressure.
Coconut oil is a natural antioxidant. It protects the body from free radical damage and prevents premature aging and degenerative diseases.
Finally, coconut oil is the best massage oil on the planet. What it does to your skin, you simply have to witness. It forms a barrier against infections, softens and moisturizes your skin, and prevents wrinkling, sagging, and age spots. It promotes healthy hair and complexion, protects from any damaging UV rays. (It is used in Ron Salley’s products.)

How do i get rid of this scar?

irockheaps

its like a lump and i got it ffrom stacking my bike ages ago and its a pinky colour and i sticks out from my knee a bit and i wanna get rid of it
also its hard and a little sore too like uncomfortbale to touch

Answer
I totally agree with the coconut oil, but first I would use Mederma to get rid of the raised part. The best scar treatment I've used, especially on old raised scars, is to use mederma 3-4 times a day like it says on the package, which majorly brings down the raised part of the scar. On an old scar, this takes about 6-8 weeks. Then you are left with a flattened pink scar, which is where using coconut oil a few times a day for a couple of weeks majorly reduces the pink shininess. I use the Mederma first to flatten the scar, and then I switch to coconut oil to make it blend into the rest of my skin and not be so pink and irridescent. (Trying to use them at the same time doesn't work, either one will make a barrier which won't let the other product touch the area and soak in.)

Mederma you can buy in a tube at target for like 20 bucks and you use a tiny bit each application so it will last for the 6-8 weeks. The coconut oil you can get at any health food store in the skin care department, and also in the baking aisle. (Although I am starting to see it in more and more regular grocery stores too). Honestly coconut oil is so good for your skin that I use it as a daily lotion instead of creams and chemical-filled junk. A little goes a long way, it doesn't stink, and it leaves your skin VERY conditioned (it even cleared up my Keratosis Pilaris on my arms) and has many health benefits. Anyway, I'm going off on a tangent so I'll stop :)

Good luck!

i hardly ever wear makeup like foundation and stuff. my question was meant more for my body.

thanks for the vitamin e tip!
ooo thanks jadea!

Answer
Most women? Honey put down the glossy magazine, most women have no such thing, and those who do are either blessed with good genes or take very good care of themselves – not to say others don’t take care of themselves!

The bumps, I’ll tell you what that may be something like keratosis pilaris; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratosis_pilaris This is essentially when your body is making too much keratin which then clogs the pores, you get a whole host of similar conditions where dead skin cells aren’t sloughing off as they should so also clog pores. I would recommend using vinegar cosmetically, even if you don’t have a problem like keratosis pilaris it will still be beneficial because as well as exfoliating the skin to prevent these bumps, it also promotes circulation, regulates skins pH and is antiseptic. To make a simple cosmetic vinegar mix 500ml of apple cider vinegar, 3ml lavender essential oil, 3ml rosemary essential oil, 2ml rosewood essential oil, and 2 tablespoons glycerine, place into a glass bottle, use on your skin at the end of your shower – as it dries the vinegar smell will go. I used to get little bumps and spots all over my arms as a kid, my doctor just told me it was because I wasn't wearing short sleeved tops (I have bad scaring so couldn't wear short sleeves), turned out he was wrong, as soon as I started using vinergar in the shower my arms improved ten fold.

Dry brush, this will stimulate circulation as well as exfoliate the skin, it has many skin benefits including ridding you of cellulite and improving tone and texture of your skin. Do this before going in the bath or shower, using a dry soft natural bristle brush. Start at the soles of your feet and work up your legs, your front and yours back, then move onto your hands and up your arms – the rule is to go towards your heart, it’s also recommended that women don’t brush their breasts, and don’t brush your face. Start off gentle and work up to brushing more vigorously, don’t be harsh as there’s no need to brush your skin raw, just firm but gentle for 5-10 minutes before your bath or shower.

I’m also a strong advocate of oils in all forms and for all the body, eaten of course is good – diet is important, but for the skin they are wonderful. Try using olive oil as a moisturiser, just put some into a spray bottle with a little nice smelling essential oil, maybe some vitamin E or other skin-positive oils like coconut oil, then after your bath or shower, every day, rub your body down with the oil – as well as smelling nice all day this is a wonderful moisturiser, this will improve the condition of your skin, it’s also cheap and not full of nasty chemicals.

I would also recommend going to natural living web sites and communities, such as Make Your Own Cosmetics http://www.makeyourcosmetics.com Pioneer Thinking http://www.pioneerthinking.com and http://community.livejournal.com/naturalliving Natural Living The reason being that as well as being able to offer you natural and cheap skin-care ideas, these people do tend to be better informed about skin and general health, so often you’ll find a lot of very useful information that may be useful to you in improving your skin and general health.

rise in blood sugar and cholesterol... healing crisis?

Aimee

my mom called me this morning to tell me about a problem she is having. recently she has been on a really great detox diet and been eating all whole grains, veggies and lots of fruit. (which is a lot different that what is normally consumed) and she also quit smoking. buuutttt.... she went to the doctor and her bloodwork was terrible. high blood sugar and high cholesteral. she has had problems with all this before and has been on meds for it. i though it might be a healing crisis??? maybe a food trigger? i dont know. any ideas?

Answer
You didn't say how long your mom has been on her detox diet other than "recently", which I take to mean a fairly short period of time. Like Rome, an unhealthy body is not built overnight and her problems are likely the result of years of eating and living less than optimally. Also like Rome, building a healthy body and getting rid of toxins, high cholesterol and high blood sugar will not happen overnight either.

There are no real "food triggers" for sudden onsets of high cholesterol or high blood sugar, at least not the kind you mention in her new health diet. Likewise, a healing crisis would not likely involve either or the two, although I suppose that there could be some additional cholesterol that is being detached from arterial buildup. Certainly detoxing and eating and living more healthily can result in some initial healing crisis "Herxheimer" type effects, so she may expect to feel worse at times before she ultimately feels much better.

By all means she should continue with her new plan, Since there may be some additional toxic load on what is likely an impaired liver (due to her previous habits), it would also be a very good idea to cleanse the liver and take additional steps to make sure that the bile duct is open and flowing as well as steps to help protect and regenerate the liver.

Here are some suggestions for the liver:

* Use a gentile liver cleanse product at least once a month and even consider a more comprehensive liver cleanse.
* Coffee enemas - help open the bile ducts so bile and toxins can be released properly.
* Coconut oil - a wonderful item everyone should take, it helps maintain a good bile flow.
* Beetroot juice - is also good for the liver and bile flow.
* Turmeric - helps regulate bile flow, and is a good cancer preventative for those who smoke or have smoked in the past.
* Milk thistle - is a must as it helps protect the liver and actually regenerate it
* Alpha lipoic acid - another good liver supplement
* Selenium - a third liver supplement that was used along with milk thistl and alpha-lipoic acid in the Berkson Clinical Study to help reverse and repair severe liver damage.

(In the Berkson Clinical Study, three women who were facing liver transplants or chemo with interferon (a horrendous treatment with very low success rates for hepatitis and cirhossis), took milk thistle, alpha lipoic acid and selenium, modified their diets a bit and got some daily exercise and restored their liver functions to normal.)

For the high blood sugar, tell your mom to read the ingredients labels carefully on the whole grain products. A lot of them still contain bleached flour, which quickly converts to sugar in the body. Initially it might be a good idea to cut back a bit on the fruits and go with more vegetables.

When it comes to both veggies and fruits, mostly raw, mostly organic is by far the best way to go. Second best would be llightly steamed. While fresh beats frozen, frozen and dried beats canned (at least canned products on the grocers shelves). Even so, canned veggies and fruits stil beat junk and fast foods by a wide margin.

Cayenne pepper - which can be obtained as a tincture - both lowers blood sugar as well as lowers bad cholesterol levels.

GTF chromium is an essential supplement to take for helping lower blood sugar.

Your mom can find additional items which lower blood sugar and which may be of benefit to her here (regardless of whether or not she is diabetic or pre-diabetic):

http://www.tbyil.com/Diabetes.htm

Whatever your mom does, tell her to stay away from cholesterol drugs at all costs! They are purely evil.

Here are some other natural items which should help with the cholesterol concerns:

* Sure gel apple or grapefruit pectin (jam & jelly stiffener). Take one heaping teaspoon in a cup of hot water nightly before bed. Two acids in the Sure gel help dissolve cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels. In about a month or less, the bad cholesterol should be much lower, and as a side affect, any heavy metals (generally, industrial toxins) should be flushed from your system. Sure gel Grapefruit pectin is 100 times stronger, but tastes awful and oxidizes and interferes with many medications.
* Vinegar, apple juice and white grape juice. Mix 1 to 2 cup of apple cider vinegar, four cups of apple juice and three cups of white grape juice. Drink six ounces every day before breakfast. Used very effectively by Pennsylvania Amish families.
* Garlic. Is cholesterol’s natural enemy. Eat three cloves daily to lower blood pressure, build immune system and guard against cancer.
* Pomegranate juice. New studies indicate that pomegranate juice not only appears to prevent hardening of the arteries by reducing blood vessel damage, but the antioxidant-rich juice may also reverse the progression of this disease.
* Green Tea. Drink one or more glasses a day. Powerful antioxidant and anti-cancer properties too.
* Turmeric. Found in curry seasoning and plain yellow mustard. Lowers cholesterol, helps guard against Alzheimer’s and may help protect smokers from cancer.
* Walnuts. Eat a half cup of walnuts every day. Almonds are also good.
* Oatmeal. Eat a bowl of oatmeal every day for breakfast. Top with walnuts or almond bits and blueberries.
* Cinnamon, water and honey. Take 10 pieces of cinnamon sticks (one inch each). Powder and then boil in five teacups of water. Add a teaspoon of honey and have a hot cup of this mixture every day. From India.
* Onion juice reduces cholesterol and works as a tonic for nervous system. It cleans blood, helps digestive system, cures insomnia and regulates the heart action & helps in lowering cholesterol.
* Sunflower seeds contain a substantial amount of linoleic acid which is helpful in reducing cholesterol deposits on the walls of the arteries. Substituting oil of sunflower seeds for some of the solid fats like butter & cream will, therefore lead to a great improvement in health & lower cholesterol.
* Other good foods to help lower cholesterol: Flaxseeds, soy (due to concerns about unfermented soy products increasing the risk for certain cancers, use only fermented soy products such as miso and tempeh), lentils, beans, salmon, avocado, spinach and other dark green leafy vegetables, margarine with no trans-fats or hydrogenated ingredients, other nuts, dark chocolate, whole wheat and other grains.
* Omega 3 oils such as fish, borage and flax oil. Lower bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol levels.
* Diet and exercise. Essential to help combat high cholesterol. Eat more vegetables and fruit and less meat and fatty foods. Find a way to be physically active each day, if only for a brisk walk, bike ride or 15-30 minute light workout.

Need relief from an ear infection.?

NitaFool

So, here's the story.
I work in a high volume work place and we do wear ear plugs. Anyways about three weeks ago my left ear started to pain. Went to bed and woke up and I couldn't hear a thing so I went to the doctor and she said nothing was wrong with me. So I go back home and the next thing I know it moves over into my right ear. The only word I can use for the pain is seriously gnarly. The gland under my ear is swollen, I can't touch my ear and I do know I have an ear infection because the doctor said so.I went to four different doctors. They gave me stronger meds and I'm not allowed to put Olive Oil in my ear or cotton swabs. I can't lay my on ear, and I can't sleep because of the pain. I tried placing a heating pad on it but it hurts to much.

The question is, do anyone know any ways for me to get some relief from the pain? Even for a short amount of time.My jaw hurts to but I doubt it's Temporomandibular Disorder. Help, please?!

note: I am taking tylenol and they only work for a certain amount of time.

Answer
Stubborn ear infections are a pain. If antibiotics aren't taking care of the problem, it might not hurt to request a prescription for an antifungal. Fungus is a likely culprit when multiple antibiotics aren't doing the job, and may have even overgrown simply because the antibiotics you were given have wiped out the natural healthy flora that control fungus in the body.

If you don't want to do a prescription anti-fungal (or the doctor doesn't want to try that), there are antifungal foods and supplements like coconut oil (which is also antiviral), oil of oregano, pau d'arco, grapefruit seed oil, melaleuca oil, and so on. Some of the Young Living essential oil distributors have taken a lot of training in healing properties of oils, there are natural health care practitioners who specialize in antifungal diets, and you can google for info, too. I once had excellent results when a convinced a doctor to to mix a sterile solution of water and a medication called Nystatin to spritz up my nose when repeated antibiotics could not get rid of chronic sinus infection. It worked perfectly and for the first time in years, I was free of sinus infection - and stayed that way for years. Maybe you have a perforation in your ears? Is that why the doctor said "no" to olive oil in your ears?

Another antibiotic substance to try is MMS. Google it up and find the free e-book about what it is, how and why it works, the clinical studies that have been done on it. Other sites have user testimonies and suggested protocols. No one is making a zillion dollars off of this, and you can make it yourself if you have a mind to. I like paying a few extra dollars for convenient bottles that squeeze uniform drops, myself. The cost in incredibly minimal for what it can do. And the results for some people have been nothing short of astounding.

Another thing that seems odd, but which may speed healing, is taking a few enemas. I know. Gross. But we get sick when we are overloaded with waste - and bad microbes love to feast on waste, and when they eat they poop: then we feel sick when microbes poop inside of us, spewing off toxins that make us feel ill. The colon is the garbage shoot our of our bodies, so when people clean it up, they often heal faster, even if the infection is at the complete opposite end of the body. The goal is to get the body back to a state of being able to deal with microbial invaders effectively - and it can't do it when it is backed up with garbage.

Also, replace the flora killed by the antibiotics, and don't wait until you are done with the antibiotics to do so. It may seem like a waste of money to pop supplements and eat lots of active-culture organic yogurt (plain, please...sugar feeds infections), but it helps. And, of course, take lots of probiotics after you finish the antibiotics, too. If you tend to get congested/runny nose with dairy, stick with probiotics in tablet form, and/or naturally lacto-fermented pickles and sauerkraut. A company called Rejuvenative Foods sells this sort of product, and you can learn how to make these foods yourself with free recipes online, and in books by Sally Fallon and Jordan Rubin to name two possibilities. It is really very easy.

Eating minimally, and only eating raw foods that sweep out the colon, will also free up energy for the body to get over this infection. The only cooked food I would recommend would be chicken or other bone broth - home-made - because it is the only cooked food that behaves somewhat like raw food in the system, promoting good hydration, requiring little energy for digestion. Raw foods have the additional benefit of having enzymes. If doing a salad, stick to light dressings like lemon juice or vinegar with little or no oil if you can. If you tolerate yogurt, a yogurt-based dressing would be a very tasty way to get your probiotics.

Hope you feel better soon. It is so miserable when pain keeps you from sleeping! The heating pad idea seems good until you realize that it is drawing lots of blood toward an already inflamed area, increasing the pressure...and thus, increasing the pain. I suppose that is why traditional healers have often suggested soaking the feet in hot water, either with or without applying a warm compress to the ear, to draw some of the pressure away from the ear. You can add Epsom Salt to the foot bath for added detox benefits. Alternative healers have various ways to help people detox via the feet, so there is ample traditional support for using foot baths.
