Is coconut oil healthy?

RedRose

I always thought coconut oil was on the "bad" oil list, like hydrogenated vegetable oil, etc. How come I'm hearing from people that it's beneficial (like olive oil). Sources online all have different stories. I love the taste and don't use it often, but I like to think when I DO use something it has health benefits.

Can anyone set this straight? Unbiased sources would be appreciated.

Answer
I agree with Paul. This article from The New York Times explains the situation with coconut oil and how the scientific understanding about it has changed in the last few years a bit more fully:

Does coconut oil help acne?

Florinda

My mom bought coconut oil the other day, and she said that it helps with acne so I'm thinking about using it for my acne. I don't have to much acne but I do have a little so I was wondering if that helped

Answer
Mom does know best! Coconut oil gives amazing results and totally cures you of acne.
It rid my face of all acne, all pimples, black and white heads and also reduced and unblocked large clogged pores (See testimonials from users feroz and Jasmin on Answers below ##).

Vigorous specialized massage gets the best and fastest results.
So as not to pull/stretch skin, first tighten by opening mouth 3/4" and pull lips firmly back against teeth. Do a forward and back (not circular) quite firm and vigorous oil massage (use oil liberally) â using tips and front of fingers and sometimes palms â depending where on face you apply. For quickest results build up to for 10 to 20 min daily massage (Doesnât have to be all in one session). Skin will clear and pores will reduce in as little as 2 to 3 days and see better results day by day. Acne will also be got rid of in first few weeks.

If apply to entire face it will give you a totally blemish free, healthy and vibrant skin. You will not need to use any other product or treatment ever again â not even moisturizers. Oil is a perfect and safe, natural moisturizer. Many moisturizng products have skin harming and acne causing toxins and other harmful ingredients. Only remove surface excess by wiping with dampened tissues. Will not leave face oily looking.

## Response from feroz who had suffered from acne for 12 years and had tried countless treatments and only got rid of it completely using the treatment.

Is coconut oil good for cholesterol?

whitesilk

I have read much about coconut being good for fighting heart disease but doesn't mention cholesterol specifically. Can they be beneficial or worsen cholesterol problem?

Answer
Coconut oil is VERY good for your health.

The Tokeluans of the Pacific Islands walk around with cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dl - 300 mg/dl and have virtually NO CHD.

FORGET cholesterol. Know your fasting blood sugar. THIS actually CAUSES CHD NOT cholesterol at all.

The low saturated fat diet does NOT lower mycardial infarctiosn CHD mortality OR total mortality.

AVOID polyunsaturated vegetable oils . Avoid UNsaturated fats . Canola , soy, corn ALL BAD. All of these oils have been found to INCREASE CHD in CLINICAL intervention trials . Saturated fat has NOT.

COCONUT ND HEALTHY SATURATED ANIMAL FAT ARE GOOD

P.S. Did you know that out of the small amount of fats that comprise an atheroma, 80 PERCENT IS UNsaturated fat?

That's right , the saturated fat our "trusted guardians and " health authorities" claim to be bad accounts for ONLY 20 % of it

Again 80 percent of the fats are UNsaturated fats

what are the benefits of it for your hair and trying to maintain weight?
and where can you buy it in pennsylvania?
thanks

Answer
The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, weight loss, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and cancer, dental care, and bone strength.

Hair Care: Coconut oil is one of the best natural nutrition for hair. It helps in healthy growth of hair providing them a shiny complexion. Regular massage of the head with coconut oil ensures that your scalp is free of dandruff, lice, and lice eggs, even if your scalp is dry. Coconut oil is extensively used in the Indian sub-continent for hair care. It is an excellent conditioner and helps in the re-growth of damaged hair. It also provides the essential proteins required for nourishing damaged hair. It is therefore used as hair care oil and used in manufacturing various conditioners, and dandruff relief creams. Coconut oil is normally applied topically for hair care.

Weight Loss: Coconut oil is very useful in reducing weight. It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight. It is also easy to digest and it helps in healthy functioning of the thyroid and enzymes systems. Further, it increases the body metabolism by removing stress on pancreases, thereby burning out more energy and helping obese and overweight people reduce their weight. Hence, people living in tropical coastal areas, who eat coconut oil daily as their primary cooking oil, are normally not fat, obese or overweight.
