My small town doesn't have coconut oil. Recipe calls for raw cocanut oil melted. I don't even know what coconut oil is. Can I use vegable oil or canola oil? Or just butter melted.
Answer
Yes. You may substitute canola oil, olive oil, etc. Raw (extra virgin) coconut oil is usually solid when purchased, but melts in warmer houses but this does not hurt it at all. A good coconut oil will smell & taste like fresh coconut. In the solid state it is pure white. It should not be refrigerated, and has a great shelf life - upwards to 2 years. It is cholesterol free.
According to the website www.nutiva.com, you can use coconut oil instead of other oils in your daily cooking. You can blend coconut oil in smoothies, use it as a spread on toast (it makes fantastic cinnamon toast), use it as a topping on popcorn, and in other recipes.
Therefore, yes, it can be substituted for other oils in your recipe.

Has Anyone Tried Eating Coconut Oil & Got Sick?

I was giving Organic Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil To take for my yeast infection & overall help me feel better. She told me to eat 3 Tablespoons a day. The lady at health food store. Now it looked good, but it was made for cooking with. So I didn't really know what to do. So I took 1 heaping tablespoon & it got really sick, It taste just like Crisco Oil, & I spit it out. So I later mixed it with a hot liquid & lemon & I got it down. But that greasy taste was nasty. Within a hour, I was so Nauseated I started Throwing Up. I Swore I would never take it again. However The next morning I got up I felt really good. I don't know if this has anything to do with the Coconut Oil Or not. But I want someone to please tell me what I am doing wrong. And if there is another way to take it without getting sick. Can you take it in capsules? Or am I taking the wrong kind of Coconut Oil. It does not taste or smell like coconut. It is made by the company "Tree of Life" Please anyone out there help!
I am also taking it to lose weight..
Answer
You should try extra virgin as it tends to taste more like coconut than oil. I can't believe she told you to take it by the spoonful. It is much easier to eat it on something like popcorn or a baked potato then to try and eat it "as is". I bought one variety and it was horrible...smelled like some kind of petroleum oil. It wasn't extra virgin, but just cold pressed. I then tried the extra virgin which smells and taste like coconut oil and you actually could have eaten it off the spoon. I'm sorry I don't remember the brand and I'm out. I just know the label is green and yellow.
