Coconut oil for dogs?

Chelsea La

I used to give my GSD fish oil pills but for the past few months have not been giving them to her. I have noticed her coat is not as shiny - not a huge change or anything but something I've noticed nonetheless. Anyway, I've been looking into Coconut Oil for dogs. I think it's something we'd like to try however, I'm worried about her having very loose stools from adding this.

My question is regarding the Coconut oil. Has anyone that uses it for their dog experienced problems with loose stools or upset tummies? When I buy it I know it's just going to be a learning experience to see what happens but I didn't know if some sort of reaction to it was usual or not. Is it a good idea to build up to a tablespoon of it a day?

Thanks :)

I use it a couple of times per week with both of my dogs. One is a Doberman (70 lbs.) and the other a small Poodle mix/mutt that weighs abouut 15 lbs. I don't actually use any exact measurement, so I just eyeball it. Neither of my dogs have had any loose stools at all from this.

Since this stuff can be a pit pricey, let me give you a little tip. I don't have a Costo membership but my cousin does, so she gets me this......Carrington Farms.....pure, unrefined, cold pressed and 100% organic extra virgin coconut oil. The one I have is a 54 oz tub, which is pretty darn big, and I think it only costed about $15.00 or something close to that.

Coconut Oil?

I have been reading a lot of info lately on the health benefits of coconut oil. Primarily using it to speed up metabolism and overall health. Does anyone else have any experience or knowledge about this?

Answer
You will need to get the right type. Most health food stores carry at least one brand and you can probably find it online.

There are two main types of coconut oil. One is refined coconut oil (might be labeled RBD for Refined, Bleached, and Deordorized). It is made from copra, or dried coconut meat, then treated to remove impurities. Most RBD coconut oil is relatively inexpensive. It does not contain all the nutrients found in unrefined coconut oil and in most cases the coconuts used are lof low quality and chemicals like chorine and hexane are used in the refining process.

The other type is Unrefined or "virgin" coconut oil and is made from fresh coconuts. hmmmm, sounds like the kind I would like best. I truly like coconut of anything. I want it to taste good and taste good to my dogs. I would go for the more expensive type.

Of course the better of the two is going to cost you more. Good-quality oil is colorless when liquid and pure white when solid, never yellow or pink and it should not contain residue or have an "off" or rancid odor. If you get hold of some coconut oil that gives you a scratchy throat or like a "catch" in the throat, this is probably a sign of poor quality. A smokey flavor or aroma is another indication of poor quality.

There are also hydrogenated and fractionated coconut oils. Hydrogenated coconut oil is not recommend because it contains harmful trans-fats. Fractionated coconut oil is a massage oil and aromatherapy ingredient and is sold as a cosmetic ingredient.
