which is better- coconut oil or butter for making chocolate chips?

Aashwin

I just got some interest in chocolate and so, i've been going through recipes on how to make chocolate chips. but i was not able to decide whether to use butter or coconut oil for making them...

Answer
Coconut oil is "healthier" but using it you will have a coconut flavor to the cookies...not all that bad in my opinion.
Coconut oil will melt at a different temperature than butter so your cookies may spread more than if you made them with butter.
It is suggested that you refrigerate cookie dough before you bake it and I would stress this even more if you were using coconut oil. Refrigerate until the dough is well chilled, overnight would be best but at least an hour.

Are you asking about making cookies or making the chocolate Chips themselves?
Chocolate chips contain chocolate liquor, sugar, an emulsifier and flavoring. Each candy maker will have their own "recipe" for the chips. You will have to do some trial and error for your recipe as well as a method to make the drops. I suggest spreading out the chocolate and cutting into chunks or breaking into chunks rather than the traditional "chip" shape.

I want to make cookies something with chocolate chips and coconut in it? Or not necessarily those things, I guess just anything with creative ingredients that isn't "decorative", just tasty! Thanks.

4 cups flour
2 cups quick oats
2 cups Wheaties or any cereal you like
1 cup of any or all of the following: coconut, chopped nuts, raisins, candy bar pieces, chocolate chips, peanut butter or chopped dates.*

Cream margarine, shortening and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix well. Add remaining ingredients.

Drop by Tablespoonfuls on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350°F. for 10 - 15 minutes. Number of cookies depends on size.

*If raisins or chopped dates are used, coat each with 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil before adding to mix.
