Is it normal for coconut oil to have this strange smell/taste?
Blevins
I made some brownies with some coconut oil that my roommate left behind. I don't know how old it was, but I noticed an odd smell when I was adding it to the recipe, and that same smell is kind of how the brownies taste now. It's hard to describe, but it's kind of a musky taste and smell. Meaty, perhaps, kind of like mushrooms. It's not really a rancid smell, there was no mold or anything unusual on the oil, and it hasn't made me sick. But I doubt the oil is supposed to have this aftertaste.
Does this sound like the coconut oil went bad? I'd appreciate answers from people who have experience using and cooking with coconut oil. Thanks!
Answer
The coconut oil has not gone bad..........yet. It is old. I would say get rid of it. By the time that musky smell and taste get to it, it is no longer good for anything. Dump it and get some new coconut oil.
