Underweight breastfed 6 mo old. ?

Happy2cu

I'm desperately trying to find ways to get my daughters weight up. She has acid reflux and is on the max dose for her weight (1.6ml *3 day). Before getting sick she weighed 13.5 and lost a pond when sick. Her doctor instructed me to try to add in tbls of butter to baby food and to use formula with her cereal. I did this for 5 days and she managed to gain her weight she lost plus some (she weighs 13.7 lbs.). However now...she refuses any babyhood with butter. I don't feel comfortable forcing it on her when she doesn't want it. I've been looking for better alternatives but am not sure what else would be good for her age. I tried alvarado (refuses). I'm just lost :( she was such a good eater before adding butter. She ate 3-5 jars a day (including cereal) and now when I sit her down to eat she just starts crying :( I've tried different butters, using a tsp. Now when i try to feed her baby food without butter she eats it but not as much as she did before I started adding the butter in. She will not take formula and I cannot pump enough breastmilk (even with a hospital grade pump). Suggestions would be helpful and if anyone knows how much fat calories a 6mo old should consume a day would help. Thanks.

Answer
How often are you pumping? To increase milk, try pumping every 2-2 1/2 hours during the day, and every 3 at night. You can also try taking fenugreek capsules (2-3 capsules 2-3 times a day), drinking Mother's Milk tea, and eating oatmeal.

All fat has the same number of calories. Have you tried olive oil (a mild one)? Coconut oil might be a good choice as well. Avocado is a favorite first food and has lots of good fat.

As far as fat calories per day, many 6 month olds are sustained strictly on breastmilk (or formula), so extra fat is normally not necessary. For some reason, your doctor is not satisfied with this, so has advised you to add fat to the diet. I think if you back down a bit with your daughter and don't make it such an issue, she may go back to liking food again. But the breastmilk will be the most important part of her diet for the rest of the first year.

how often does your 15 month old eat?

how many times a day do you do juice? milk? water?
how many meals? is it baby food? if so what size jar?
how many snacks?

My daughter is 15 months old and weighs 15 lbs.
she is technically labeled "failure to thrive"

She has a large jar of high calorie babyfood in the morning with 5oz formula (per dr. order ), (250 calories)
a snack mid morning with 4 oz juice, (160 calories )
a medium jar high calorie babyfood at lunch with breastmilk, (apx 160 calories)
a mid-day snack with 4oz Lactaid milk ( per dr. order ) (250 calories )
dinner with us, no drink ( per dr. order ) ( 100 calories )
breastmilk (60 calories )

evening snack -

A large Jar high calorie baby food.
6 oz lactaid milk mixed with 1 TBSP coconut oil. (505 calories )

I wake her up at about 2 am and try to give her at least 2 oz formula. (40 calories)

She still won't gain weight.
she only eats that much because thats the most she will eat. At 15 lbs she is not even on the charts. She has not gained wieght in about 6 months.
hello friends - I can't even get my eight year old to eat that much in one sitting. lol

Answer
That doesn't sound like a lot of food at each meal ... my 14 month old son sometimes will eat more than I do for lunch and he's only in the 55th % for weight. He rarely has baby food from a jar these days unless we are traveling or going somewhere that may not have suitable food for him. But if he does have jar food now he will eat 2 jars per meal (veggie/meat and fruit).

His typical schedule is:

Breakfast - 8 AM

2 waffles and 1/2 banana or other fruit
Yogurt
Water to drink

Mid morning
Cup of milk
Cheese cubes or goldfish crackers

Lunch:
1/2 cup of pasta / mac and cheese or grilled cheese / PBJ sandwich
4-5 tsp fruit cocktail or yogurt
A few cheese cubes or puffies
Water to drink

2 PM
Cup of milk and sometimes another snack

Dinner:
Whatever meat we are having ... chicken, beef, fish
Peas or corn
Stuffing or potato
Yogurt or fruit for dessert
Water to drink

I've never given my son juice. He only drinks water or milk. He prefers water with meals and milk as a snack.

Maybe introducing more adult food will help her gain weight?

Good luck.

Hope this helps.
